Main characters generally steal the spotlight, but sidekicks are the glue that either holds games together or completely unravels them. In this video, I explore five sidekicks who nail their roles and five who definitely need improvement.

Please refrain from asking me "Where's (name)?" We all have our favorites, and there's absolutely no possibility that I could fit everyone's on here.

I've seen a large majority of your countdowns, Zhang, and I have to say you're really good with it. I appreciate that you use actual, crucial, and accurate information of each entry to decide where to put them in the spotlight; not like other people who choose entries just on preference.

Fun fact. While Zitz is player 2, it's he's the leader of the battletoads, meaning the leader is the sidekick.

How can you not expect plot twists? They exist in practically every awesome game, whether it's Shiek revealing himself/herself as Zelda, Samus being a woman, or even "thank you Mario, but your princess is in another castle."
  • @ZhangtheGreat
Actually, he is in Galaxy. He's unlocked after beating the game with Mario. He may not have made any appearances in two of the past major platformers, but he's still been around other Mario games. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is probably the best example I can think of in which he co-stars and is an integral part of the game.

"she was also incredibly helpful if OoT was your first Zelda game ever." So... it was important for her to tell you that the hallway was spiral? You couldn't possibly have figured that out on your own without hours and hours of trial and error?

What's that music at the beginning from? I can't quite put my finger on it. I know I've heard it somewhere, and it makes me think of Mario.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@ThatBoyTLong, eh, I didn't really know where to put Navi. Yes he was annoying, but he was also very helpful if OoT was your first Zelda game.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@JLoable95, did you even read what I wrote in the video? When he evolves, he's a TOTALLY DIFFERENT POKEMON. That means he's not "Magikarp" anymore, so it doesn't matter. Notice I DIDN'T include Gyarados on this list at all?
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@MaxDamageProductions, see, I didn't know where to put Navi, so I kept her off. While she was annoying, she was also incredibly helpful if OoT was your first Zelda game ever.
  • @infantryhawk
i wasn't expecting that i'd need to try and avoid something... i didn't think there would be any plot twists in the game.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@scorand, are you sure that's the original Duck Hunt and not one of those online flash games?
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@dstebbin, when did she say that? I don't remember. What I do remember is how she explained the buttons you needed to push in order to do things, such as climb ledges or move blocks. That's pretty helpful in case you didn't read the manual or forgot what was on it by the time you grabbed the controller.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
@jacobeickmeier123, yes they are. Madden is the color commentator to the play-by-play man. Zits is "player two" always. Magikarp is a Pokemon (main character is the kid you play as). Slippy is Fox's backup buddy. The Dog is the dog you hunt with.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
See, I told you there are no secrets anymore. Trying to avoid finding out something that was release years ago is nearly impossible now.
  • @ArdentArden
If by "When Wander must battle solo, Agro loyally awaits his return" you mean he runs over to you and blocks your view before you can fire arrows at the colossus, then yeah, that's pretty much true. Though I do acknowledge Agro's selflessness even if it did test my frustrations; however, I didn't appreciate Agro until my second playthrough. I got mad at Agro a lot during my first playthrough.
  • @TheICECA
What about Kazooie (sorry if I butchered that spelling) from Banjo Kazooie, or Geno from Super Mario RPG?
  • @ZhangtheGreat
Remember, bad games were not considered. Yes, Tails is a stupid whiny bitch in the newer Sonic games, but how many newer Sonic games are actually good? When Tails starred alongside his buddy back in the 1990's, he was unbelievably useful and loyal.
  • @ZhangtheGreat
Yes, Madden is a sidekick. Since he's the color commentator, he plays a supporting role to the play-by-play person, thus making him a sidekick even though the series is named after him =P
  • @sproy1
3:12 "Unless you've never played Duck Hunt before, what other sidekick can you think of that deserves to be here?" Ahem, *clears throat* HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! LISTEN! HEY! @ITSOVER9000ish, yes, and he's in the top five. What more do you want?
