The M3 Pro MacBook Pro, on paper, looks like a very marginal upgrade compared to, well this year’s model. The M2 Pro MacBook Pro literally came out 9 months before this. Someone could’ve had a child in that time frame. There can’t be that many updates right? I spent over 2 weeks with this laptop, and here’s my experience with it.

Before this I was rocking a 14in M1 Pro Macbook pro. The M3 Pro Macbook pro looks identical to it except for the new space black color. The M3 Pro MacBook pro also comes with a color matched black magsafe charger, but the charging brick itself is still white. To summarize, what’s new about this model vs last year's M2 Pro boils down to, a new chip, slightly brighter display, slightly more RAM, and new color.

Here’s a quick rundown of what I do day to day. I edit YouTube videos, thumbnails for those youtube videos, research video topics, write scripts, handle my business expenses, plan out my YouTube production schedule, and plan sponsor segments all off this machine. I’m constantly multi-tasking off of it. Basically, I use it as the center of my YouTube life. And for that, it’s done really really well. The laptop doesn’t get hot until I’m nose deep into editing a youtube video in FCPX but even then it runs a little cooler than my old M1 pro version, but the fan is a little more audible when you’re pushing it. But even then, it doesn’t get super loud. Battery life feels comparable to the M1 Pro version and the 18GB of ram adds a little more headroom than what I had on the M1 Pro Macbook Pro and I struggled trying to get it to hit the cap except when I had like 10 safari tabs open, and had to render a whole 15 minute video in Final Cut Pro at the same time. This laptop is an absolute monster at getting crap done and is a real workhorse. Whatever I reasonably throw at it, it gets it done. Butmy M1 Pro MacBook pro, that I use today. Is still exactly everything I used to describe the M3 Pro. Fast, gets everything done, has great battery life and rarely stutters. The new Space black is nice, but overall I think it’s still more fingerprint-y than the space gray but less than the midnight color on the their macbook airs, and I’m worried how the ports will look long term after using this laptop for a while. Since I’ve personally seen how their midnight MacBook air laptops look after a year.

If you’re rocking any Intel Macbook, this one will blow you away with its performance to the point where you might even consider the cheaper M2 Macbook air or M3 Macbook pro. It’s that great of a difference. But if you’re on an Apple Silicon mac already. You’re good for a long time. The only real reason I would see someone on an Apple Silicon Mac needing to upgrade is someone who’s using a non/pro chip needing the pro variant instead or needing more ram now. So if you’re planning to upgrade to a 14in MacBook pro. Which one should you buy? That’s gotten harder to determine, because Apple has staggered the Macbook lineup perfectly into a staircase with really expensive steps. If you want something for general everyday tasks, get the M2 air. You want something with a really nice screen for streaming videos to? M3 14in Pro. You’re using this laptop to get things done? M3 14in Pro with 16 GBs of ram. That extra ram will be super helpful. You code, design, edit photos, or videos? M3 Pro. And if you need the absolute best, then M3 Max Macbook Pro. But keep in mind that thing is completely overkill for 99% of users and also requires a downpayment on a new car.

Just upgraded to a 14inch M3 Pro, 18GB Ram, 1TB storage from a Mid 2013 MB Air, intel i7, 8GB Ram, 512gb Storage. I’m happy with my upgrade!

This was a fantastic video, thank you Jimmy! It's about time I leave my 2015 13-in MacBook pro behind. Super excited for a huge difference!
  • @TheTechRak
As always, great content once again. Thanks Jimmy!

I am laying to rest my 9 year old Mac Book pro for the M3 Mac Book Pro!
  • @syafiighazali
Exactly the kind of buyer's guide I was looking for, thanks!
  • Finally, a video that speaks to all types of users. He used terms and phrases that actually helped me figure out which one I am going to get. Thank you!

Thank you sm for this review cause I was genuinely considering getting the M3 Pro 14 inch for my first laptop but you made me reconsider and now I've decided to get the M2 Air 15 inch 🙏
  • Great review and description of the Apple Staircase, this year it’s never been harder to make the choice.

Thank you for a nice review. I have a 14" M1Pro / 16 GB, and I am considering switching to the same size, the M3 Pro model with 18 GB. One other thing - please make a review on the Soundcore speaker you've shown in this video and, if you can, compare it to the Sonos Move :) All of the best!

I have Macbook Pro from 2018 and I don't edit videos or anything like that. I just use it for browsing lol and I will still go with 14inch M3 Pro and 18GB Ram
  • I just upgraded from a 2015 Retina 15" and this is of course a huge difference. I got the space black which is cool, but not loving the fact that I see more finger prints on it.
  • Finally a review without 90% negativity. Appreciate the insight
  • Great video as always Jimmy! I initially ordered the M3 version and upgraded the RAM to 16GB until I realized that it was only $200 to get all the benefits of M3 Pro, more than double the RAM of the base model, better processor, extra thunderbolt port, space black color, ability to drive 2 external displays, better thermals. Ended up canceling my order and getting the base M3 Pro and am currently typing this on that device, super happy with my purchase!

Great review and perspective. I'm laughing at the people complaining about the lack of a huge jump in power. I'm impatiently waiting for my MB Pro 16 in 12/18 36 gb 1T to arrive. Trying to run Lightroom classic on my 2019 intel MB Pro feels like using a PC from the 90's . I 'm impressed with how long other commenters have kept their devices. You bring up a good point about over specing and getting the correct fit.
  • I have the 16inch M1Pro and gotta say its a powerhouse, I dont see the need to upgrade for a very long time, I havent even pushed the M1Pro chip to its limits and I sometimes render 4k HDR or 8k video

Smashed before the 3 min mark. Greeeat video.
  • This video made me think of my setup. I have the m2 air with 16gb mem and 512. Love it. Had a m1 max binned with 64gb 16”. It was great. That said it was such a brick. I own an agency and use Adobe (mostly Illustrator and PS, Indesign) and FCP. I am not going to tell you the m1 max was the same as the mba. Of course it’s faster but honestly for what I do it feels very sim and the form factor is so awesome sauce. Even using it on an apple studio display and very good. Apple Silicon to me feels like for the vast majority of users the lower end model with 16gb ram is more than enough. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the benchmarks and the clickbairt and thumbnails it’s easy to forget that it is needed to do what we need it to do. Eventually I might get the 15” but honestly I really like the smaller size and along with an ipad pro when I travel it is a really good amount of screen.
