Carbon Capture and Storage (animation)

Published 2009-07-07
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This technology is being pursued by many countries around the world. This animation shows how the process will work once it's implemented in Alberta.

With all of this carbon dioxide readily available, couldn't some of it be used in fire suppression systems, shielding gas used in welding industry, CO2 refrigeration systems, creation of dry ice, or boring and fracking sites?
  • @neeraj880
Is  there any impact on earth temperature and any impact in mineral composition of soil or earth??
  • @YourAlberta
There are many industrial uses CCS can be used in, some to generate electricity. Full details are available at energy.alberta.ca

Why not plating trees. Trees are simple , natural way of converting CO2 to O2 + veggies
  • Nice video. I like code lyoko 34's idea about the plant part. Also, I see 2 problems: Emissions are created from the tanker's fuel and energy used for the compressor. Lets lower emissions by using electric tankers & compressors fueled by electricity from solar/wind power stations!

Or just make huge green houses and pump the co2 in there then the plants will make food, jobs and make oxygen.

hmmm somewhere along in the course of my schooling, maybe around 7th grade, we learned about PHOTOSYNTHESIS. CO2 is used by plants and converted through respiration locking the carbon in plants and releasing O2. what the hell are we trying to starve the plants for? As CO2 levels rise in the atmosphere, plants will grow to catch up on the abundant CO2 producing denser vegitation, and producing more O2. Water vapor is the worst green house gas there is, not CO2. Volcanoes do the most polu

New research shows oxygen depletion in the atmosphere accelerating since 2003, coinciding with the biofuels boom; climate policies that focus exclusively on carbon sequestration could be disastrous for all oxygen-breathing organisms including humans

Great video. Great technology. Thanks Alberta.
  • Now I know what the deal is with all those trucks carrying "compressed CO2"!
  • @VenaMarissa
If CO2 is transported by truck that also produce CO2, it's kinda defeat the purpose right?
  • @iangibbs8031
Mike Bell - There is more Oxygen in the atmosphere than you would believe. 21%. The excess Oxygen is released from the flue into the atmosphere...Why worry?
  • @Mike-lp1ij
There is one flaw I see in this. Where is the Oxygen recovery? We should be focusing on storing the Carbon and freeing the Oxygen. Depleting Oxygen should be avoided. Oxygen is need for biological and atmospheric resilience.
  • @lriggin1
@megacanam see terrestrial sequestration. negligent compared to the CO2 we release into the atmosphere from human activity.
  • @Goodmanstd
Let us benefit from the CO2 and add with H2 then we will get the following CO2 + 4H2 = CH4 +2 H2O, CH4 Methane is feed stock of all petrochemicals, petroleum products, gas for cooking etc etc.....
