What did Europe look like before the Second World War? This video redraws the map of Europe from 2016 to 1933 while explaining what’s happened.

1933 is only 83 years back in time, but still an entire world away. This is the year of the interwar period when the Nazis took power in Germany, leading to enormous consequences for Europe, that forever altered the political, cultural and geographical landscape of the continent.

ERRATA
• The small island of Lagosta, off the Adriatic coast, is marked as part of 1933 Yugoslavia. It was in fact part of Italy.
• The eastern part of present-day Moldova (the Transnistria region) is merged into 1933 Romania. It should instead be separated and merged with the Soviet Union.
• In northern present-day Morocco, the Tangier International Zone is missing from the 1933 map.
• Spanish Morocco is shown as slighly too large.
• The Dutch province of Flevoland didn't yet exist in 1933, as it was still under water.
• The Franco-Italian border is very slightly off, as Italy in 1914 should include some minor areas of France.

Poland after WWII: SLIDE TO THE LEFT
  • Does anyone think Poland has the most insane border change in history? Stalin literally decided to "move" the entire country a few hundred miles west, not sure if anything else like that ever happened.

Is it bad that I'm more familiar with the 1933 map of Europe than the modern day one due to HOIV xD

"This is what europe is supposed to be" Serbia: Looks at Kosovo Well yes but actually no.
  • How about 1815? You don't have to put in all the German or Italian states.

Next up we’re gonna give Russia a more fitting color.... Turns it Red Lol
  • 2:13 - Slight mistake. Moldova today includes a little sliver of land sandwiched between the River Dniester and its eastern border - Transnistria, which is actually an unrecognized breakaway state, but anyway. Back in 1933, Moldova's (Romania's) border was set at the River Dniester, with Transnistria being part of the Soviet Union. Seeing how narrow the country is, it probably wouldn't even show up on this map, but I just thought I'd point it out.

  • I bet in 100 years time you and I will be on some future version of youtube watching some guy talk about 2016 borders compared to 2116 borders and how different they look.

Thank you for mentioning the Russian-occupied areas of Petserimaa and Jaanilinn. Those small Estonian border territories are almost never shown.
  • I still come back to this video time to time, it’s just so well made:)
