What did Europe look like on the verge of World War I? This video redraws the map of Europe from 2014 to 1914 while explaining the differences.

ERRATA
• Vatican City was established in 1929 and should not appear on the final 1914 map.
• The central parts of the 1914 German border with Russia are slightly too advanced.
• Germany in 1914 should also include a very small part of present-day eastern Czechia (the so-called 'Hultschiner Ländchen').
• Spanish Morocco is shown as slighly too large.
• The Dutch province of Flevoland didn't yet exist in 1914, as it was still under water.
• The Franco-Italian border is very slightly off, as Italy in 1914 should include some minor areas of France.

“Getting rid of Poland has been a favourite activity for many of its historical neighbors, so we'll jump on the bandwagon, too."
  • @richamo13
You forgot to remove the province of Flevoland from the Netherlands. It belonged to the water back then

1814: A lot of city states and a bunch of little small countries 1914: Big, huge countries composed of a lot of land/countries grouped together 2014: Back to a bunch of countries Meanwhile in France: "Wait, ya'll change?" Meanwhile in Poland: "Wait, ya'll don't get constantly pushed around?"

"First thing we're gonna do is get rid of Iceland" 100-gigaton nuclear detonation in the background
  • The 1914 map has got to be my favorite map of Europe ever. It is so simple, elegant, smooth... It was brilliant. And then the war came...

I love when he’s like “look at this a great power the size of France!” He says so nicely with his accent

If you would go just a couple of years back the Ottoman Empire would be even larger.

  • @Vengir
Nice one, but I would change Romania's colour, because in 1914 it is barely distinguishible from Russia.
  • Wow. Now that I think about it, my great grandmother (whose still alive) was born before Ireland became an independent country!
  • @inkydino2337
“Let’s get rid of Ukraine too” That aged amazingly
  • Due to democracy and the territorial satisfaction of most nations, I doubt borders will look very different 100 years from now. The biggest changes will probably occur in the Balkans and Ukraine.
  • "after only 4 generations" yeah theres actually over 1000 people still alive now in 2018 that were alive pre 1914... the oldest is chiyo miyoko <--idk how to spell who during 1914 was already a teenager
