I have a different mill, RF 40 clone. I mounted my vertical scale with the sliding seal to the back of the machine, and had the read head attached by a bracket that reached across the glass scale assembly. Since the sliding seal is now away from swarf and spray, I skipped adding an additional cover shield. The aluminium scale is pretty strong. It’s been about 2 years now and have had no problems.

Ballscrews have to low amount of friction for manual milling. You would be better of with the acme leadscrew an locking the gib in one direction while milling. You will likely end up wrecking a bunch of endmills. Ballscrews are designed to be used with holding torque by stepper or servo motors. The dro will give you the accuracy you need. Hope this helps and saves you some money.
  • I'm Sorry, I apologise, but when you were setting up for the second bend, I thought to myself, Now, Don't bend this the wrong way, and sure enough You did. Thanks for showing us the mistakes, it does help us learn not to make them ourselves.πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
