Only Connect - Insane 5 Point Guess

Context if you are familiar with the show:
This is the sequence round, where you guess what's written on the fourth card, meaning, leaving aside the fact that this was an incredible piece of knowledge this was from Aaron (that all the red properties in UK monopoly added to £680, and that all dark blue properties added to £750), they also guessed which one would come last correctly, because this could easily have been in ascending order, but wasn't, and could equally have been descending (admittedley would've been weirder), and could've done something even stranger, like been descending the rainbow colours (it's Only Connect after all). This is also, as far as I know, the second time a team got 5 points for an answer in the show's history, at the time. Earlier in the fourth series it was also done.
This is S04 E16, the final, making it all the more impressive, where the winner of the episode would win the series and the trophy etc, this team - the Epicureans, did go on to win the episode after a thunderous missing vowels round.

Context if you are unfamiliar with the show:
Only Connect is a British gameshow where two teams receive alternating questions that require general knowledge, logic, and general nerdiness to grasp. In the first round, the format is similar to this but instead of guessing the fourth item, the contestants have to guess what links all of the cards being shown, and the fewer cards you see, the more points you get. Contestants can ask for the next card at any time, but being able to see two, and getting the correct answer, will only give you 3 points, then seeing three gives you 2 points, then seeing all four will give you 1 point. Generally, the connection becomes clearer the more you see, with the third and fourth being the most obvious (except in these odd chain cases, where you might either see it straight away or probably not at all).
Now, bear with me, in the second round the same kind of principle applies but instead of guessing the connection alone, you need to guess the fourth item in the sequence, you can only be shown a total of three cards. Essentially, you need to realise the connection and THEN get the final item in the sequence. This team (really just the guy on the right), worked out the context, the likely connection, and the correct piece of the sequence. On a final note, this hardly ever happens in the show, even after 16+ series and several hundred episodes, this one just sticks out to me, that it was actually right.
And now, you're welcome to read the additional context for familiar viewers, just at the top!

All rights to the BBC, just wanted to upload the clip without the episode, I do not profit at all from this video.

Sorry I know this isn't too important to clarify, but I feel I should, my primary reason for uploading this is the guess that the fourth clue was what it was, rather than a different ascension in the sequence - the knowledge regarding Monopoly property values is widespread enough, and 5 points is always on the table when there's no room to imagine the clue as anything else (than Monopoly values in this case).

The fact that he not only made the connection instantly, but also knew the total combined values of all the dark blue properties!

I got a 5 point answer on the sequence round once. The clue was Zooey Dechanel. I only knew of her from the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so instantly knew the answer was Susan Sheridan, the first actress to play Trillian way back in the radio series. If this comment seems boring, you should hear me describing it in excruciating detail in conversation where I'm not limited to typing.

Y'know, Karl Pilkington was onto something when he said he doesn't bother trying to guess the answer and instead tries to guess who's going to answer the question. Mental

I'm convinced this game is the inspiration for the Number Wang sketch.

It's interesting that he immediately says 'Dark Blue £750" - I think I would have said Green, because the total value is the highest. Thankfully (for him) he only thought of the order going around the board, and didn't pause for a moment and say 'hang on - what if it is in order of total value?'

I saw it on the thumbnail and thought "Monopoly?" But I definitely wouldn't have got it under the pressure of the studio, fair play to the guy, that was immediate!

Easy peasy. Surprising of a Tory mp to know the value of something

I mean, I guessed what the connection was from just that one clue, but never in a million years would have guessed the actual number. But then if you're going on only connect, you memorise the monopoly board. Simple as that. It's in virtually every episode.

It's a good Only Connect Team that can work out the connection and guess the fourth answer - it's an excellent team that can work out the first clue and work out the fourth clue ... and then there is this team that simply knows the total values of the sets of properties on a monopoly board ...
  • @tzeentchian
Monopoly was my first thought too. Not sure I would have guessed which set was the fourth one, but the Mayfair set is probably one of the easiest to remember the prices of, that and old Kent rd set
  • @robertianhawdon
Ah, I got it was Monopoly property set values, but didn’t realise this was round two. 😂
  • @krisinsaigon
I got that from the video thumbnail, glad I was right. I watch only connect a lot so I am used to how the questions work
  • Aaron Bell is also a champion of The Krypton Factor (the Ben Shepherd reboot on ITV in 2010, not the Gordon Burns original)
