Meet Dr. Benjamin Bikman, author of Why We Get Sick. In this interview we talk about all things insulin resistance! Signs, symptoms, testing, how it’s linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and more. Dr. Bikman shares information from his book on how to prevent and reverse insulin resistance for sustainable weight loss and disease prevention.

If you have high blood sugar, high blood pressure, or excess weight, this episode is for you. 8-9/10 people tuning in have insulin resistance. For such a common condition, I’m always shocked that so few people even know it exists.

Insulin resistance is at ground zero for weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and so much more. Dr. Bikman has his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics. As a professor at Brigham Young University and the director of its Diabetes Research Lab, Dr. Bikman studies insulin, including its role as a regulator of human metabolism, as well as insulin’s relevance in chronic disease.

Chronic dieting will not work for sustainable weight loss. The only way to lose weight, keep it off, and prevent disease is to live a low insulin lifestyle. I know that may sound strange to you, but it's true.

When "How will this affect my insulin" becomes your new litmus test instead of, "How many points or calories does this have," weight loss clicks into gear!

  • They tried to give me insulin .. I’m a type 2 diabetics .. I refused it .. I’m getting better without it … instead of getting worse with it

    Every time I mention insulin resistance to anyone, they look at me as though I've just begun speaking chinese., a fairly simple concept that is still being either suppressed or looked at as an insignificant aspect to health!.... its AMAZING how long someone can have insulin resistance before their glucose rises to a "worrisome" level.......... and all the while, all those years your insulin was being driven out of control as your doctor gave you a thumbs up on your way out of the freekin door!

    I'm learning something new from each of your podcasts!!! I just realized that based on my recent triglycerides and HDL ratio, I 've reversed my insulin resistance to insulin sensitivity!! 😀I'm so blessed to become my own doctor, even though that irritates some people!!
  • I have an aunt in her 80's. She tells me she has normal blood sugar. I was wondering why her mid section looks as if she is 9 months pregnant. I was surprised to find out you could still be insulin resistant and have low blood sugar. That was an amazing revelation to me.
  • Why We Get Sick. The book is great. It's a little difficult for the common Joe like me but it also made SO much sense!! The reason his book is doing so good is because we were given BAD info, bad eating and nutrition advise for 40 years. We were told to follow the food pyramid, eat margarine, vegetable oils, low fat, lots of breads and cereals. We followed the USDA guidelines and it only made our health worse! I could see my Type2 getting worse for 20 years. Thank God for Ben Bikman. I'm down 30 pounds and using 70% less insulin now. (in 6 months!) I'm working on reversing my T2D!

    Best catch phrase I've run across: "... how will this affect my insulin ..."
  • I made 5 pounds of ghee last week and added 5 bulbs of fresh raw grated garlic to it. It sits on the stove in a jar with a big spoon in it so whatever we cook we add a few spooss full of garlic "butter".. we never buy packaged food. So we're so healthy and we smell so good!
