Adab: The Blueprint for Being in The Work

Published 2024-06-16
“When you speak, take care to speak only from your own experience and your own state. You should not talk about things you have not lived.”
~ Ibn al-Husayn al-Sulami

The Arabic word “adab” is often translated into English as “manners” or “etiquette”, but it means a great deal more. It can be understood as the blueprint for how to be in the Work, in the world, and in community, as well as how to be a student, and how to be a teacher. In some ways, it is the most important part of any and all of these processes, as it demands the development of both conscience and foresight. Adab is considered so important that the Prophet Muhammad said, “The best among you in religion are those with the best adab.”

So let’s spend an hour or so discovering what Adab really is, and how we can use it as a guide to getting the most out of the Work.

    - when you speak. Speak from your own experiences and states - Overall foundation depends on skillfulness, self discipline and faith - Don’t put yourself forward as being important - In fame lies calamity - Never point to yourself ( words do not matter, actions does) your behavior matters not words. - Do not interfere in matters of others - Don’t become intimate with rich and powerful - Never go where you have not been invited - Do your best to avoid being condescending to others ( never assume you know what a person needs. Don’t fix it ) - Do not attach to particular place ( this is a transitory thing). Neurotic non attachment vs healthy Attachment - Use of music and movement balance - Balance ( Spend your words wisely, treat your food as medicine, cultivate solitude and avoid company of willfully ignorant ) - Avoid marriage until you can make a match with someone with whom you are truly compatible - Don’t embellish your outer person because ornament is mark of inner poverty ( which means in religious sense that you have tasbeeh and you are wearing a outside look of Sufi ) - Never quarrel with people and never ask favors from anyone - Be sure you are burden to no one - Put no confidence in this world or worldly people. Let your heart be filled with humility - Be in your body, embrace your emotions but do not identify with them - Let your actions be straight forward and prayer sincere - Choose a poor person as your companion - Let your home be house of prayer - Let the highest truth be your guide
