How do you compare to the ‘average’ cyclist?

I started cycling in November 2020 on a £500 halford boardman. Loved it so much upgraded my bike a month later to a roubaix comp 2021. Unfortunately after just 500 miles I get diagnosed with cancer in March 21. Had the all clear in November this year and to celebrate I did my 1st century last Sunday in 7.45hrs. Great channel all ❤️
  • Your discussion of the start of winter sparked a thought for me: My first wife (I was only supposed to have one--but such is life) chose as our wedding day June 21--the longest day of the year and, consequently, the shortest possible wedding night of the year. I should have recognized that as an omen. The second wife chose as our wedding day December 21--the shortest day of the year and, consequently, the longest possible wedding night of the year. Needless to say, the second marriage has been utter bliss. ;-) Here's to the winter solstice!

  • The seasons are defined astronomically: Spring begins with the Vernal Equinox (around March 20, northern hemisphere), Summer with the Summer Solstice (around June 21), Fall with the Autumnal Equinox (around September 23), and Winter with the Winter Solstice (around December 21). The equinox is defined as the moment when the plane defined by the moment the earth's equator passes through the geometric center of the sun, and the solstices are defined as the moment the sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator. The local time of these events depends on longitude and the although the local time of these events does not vary, the terms Spring/Fall, Summer/Winter are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere. The advantage of defining these terms in astronomical terms allows discussion to share a common basis and reduces confusion.

One reason Brazil might have slower times is that mountain bikes (XC almost exclusively) prevail over road bikes by a lot! We're mostly riding gravel or singletrack trails.
  • Longest ride -12:05hrs (Everesting) Shortest ride -5 meters, fell off bike at end of driveway breaking my scaphoid in wrist 😂

Hi Si and Dan, Just finished my final FTP Test for GCN's Zero to Hero workout plan on Zwift. My FTP is up 30% and my weight came down 6%. My FTP went from 2.5 W/KG to 3.4 W/KG. Couldn't be happier with the results. Well done GCN on the great program!

I don't know how fair the comparison of distances traveled per country is, Strava is used mostly in English-speaking countries(US and UK make up almost 50% of active users), it's not exactly something "popular" outside these. It's not like the grandma in Netherlands is uploading her rides to Strava, but she rides quite often.

GCN- “we need to stop making fun of Ollie for getting dropped” Starts making fun of him for walking so slow
  • @bele13
Love the first place inspirational photo. I'm planning to move to the area myself, so it seems like I have quite some riding to look forward to. 🤩

Here in Central Pennsylvania, I pretty much just divide the year into two seasons--Mid-October to Mid-April is generally cool or cold, Mid-April to Mid-October is generally warm or hot. And no knock on specific seasons, just that the lines between them are hazy around here, tho' I do like it when a day is true to its season, like a spring morning or a hot summer afternoon or even a mighty snowstorm in winter.
  • @bhargavsawant611
I started riding in March 2020 after my Tumor surgery, and till December 24th, I've put 2200kms+ . Also, Triban RC 100, is my first ever cycle, All thanks to GCN ! ♥️ Planning to do around 3000kms till March. Wish me luck !

Si: "No one can argue when Christmas is, can they?" Well, yes they can. The observance of Christmas around the world varies by country. :)

MSBrewer here! Thanks for the Hack for my 3D spacer. Was a great fun project and is opening the doors to more 3D printed spacers! Big up the GCN crew 🤙🏼
