“At this time, it is not possible for residents to return to Jasper to view their property or collect their belongings. The townsite is not safe. We are still very early in our recovery process. The chemicals released by structural fire are a serious risk to health,” said Christine Nadon, Jasper municipality incident commander.
“This fire is the largest one that Jasper National Park has recorded in the last 100 years,” added Landon Shepherd, deputy incident commander for Parks Canada. “Currently, we're going to be working on this wildfire — we expect — over the next three months at least. What the last five years has taught us is that the fire season in Jasper tends to last well into the fall.”
The municipality of Jasper also released a map and address list of damaged and destroyed residences and businesses on their website. In a Friday update, Parks Canada officials confirmed that 358 structures — or about 30 per cent — within the townsite in Jasper National Park were destroyed by the wildfire that burned through the community.

The Lahaina Residents were frightful of these times after they couldn't go on their properties for fear of pillaging and theft..

Once the lightning struck, they were doomed. There's nothing anybody could do against 300 foot high flames. They needed to remove all those dead trees and dense stands before the fire started.
-
We, as Canadians, talk way too much and get nothing done till it's too late. These are the consequences.
-
It's sad that the mayor of Jasper has repeatedly asked parks Canada/federal government to deal with the dead standing trees from the pine beetle for years
-
Okay, we see the problem

Your best prevention was never any good. You need to change all in charge. The Mayor, provincal leader, fire chief and anyone who were unfit in making decisions.
-
God bless Jasper Families ❤

This has been very heartbreaking,as the destruction to homes and businesses is beyond tragic, while I don’t know if anyone was hurt? I am wondering about the wildlife that live in the area? As they would have been caught up in it and it’s just very sad💔😔

Jasper holds many great memories, I am so very sorry to you all...

After the Kenow Fire in Waterton ( seven years ago now) there should have been a complete rework of all current fire protocols.
-
I was there 2 weeks ago and had the best day visiting the town in a long time I hope the people that are left will be strong and rebuild and bring back our jewel of Canada to the glory it once was.
-
Is it true that homeowners don't own the land the homes are built on? If that's true will they be able to rebuild?
-
This is so traumatic!…I hope the iconic & historical Information Centre building is not damage. 🙏🙏🙏
-
Thank you Christine and Landon. ❤🩹
-
I am so sorry, this breaks my heart.

For years residents were very concerned about the dead trees killed by the pine beetle. Yet authorities did nothing about it. A guess an out of control wildfire will take care of things.
-
Love and commiserations to the people of Jasper... we in Australia can relate ❤😢
