So glad The Beatles brought their guitars with them to India.

The White Album...John playing this tune...Paul playing "Blackbird." What a great variety of music from that album.

Probably the most honest, pure and beautiful song John ever wrote. Thanks for the instructional!
  • After Donovan showed John Lennon this picking style he made this wonderful tribute to his mother Julia how beautiful.

Finally............somebody who can effectively explain and demonstrate Travis-picking, and make it understandable for us city folk out here. Absolutely the best guitar lessons on the net !
  • @donnywest
Beautiful! You’ve managed to teach a lifelong Beatles guitarist a new skill. I’ve avoided finger-picking for 55 or so years. It took me about four hours to finally get it. The chords are easy, be patient and it will come. Thanks!
  • George sternly said to Paul..”we’re not here to make our next album, we’re here to meditate ! “ Lennon’s genius…learns this new to him picking technique and proceeds to write a handful of brilliant songs from it

Just turned 61 and have been using YouTube tutorials since they appeared. You are by far the most accurate, clear and concise teacher out there. thanks for all your awesome work.

One of Lennon's finest songs. Great lesson.

John Lennon was a great guitarist in many ways. Thanks for showing how to play one of John's most beautiful tunes...along with the guitar work the lyrics are soft and gentle which perfectly matches the fingerpicking and chords.

A sublime, ethereal song by Lennon. Poignant and full of longing. Lennons genius lay in his ability to match these beautiful chords to the poetry

Congratulations on a shoutout from the official John Lennon FB page.
  • It is helpful to know basic Travis picking before trying this lesson. There are many vids on youtube on how to play basic Travis picking. (Also glad that Donovan was in India when the Beatles were there with their guitars. It was Donovan who taught John Travis picking.) That F chord is a killer. Practice, practice, practice.

Much better than most of these instruction videos. I learned to play Julia years ago but needed a refresher course. I especially like the way you describe the strings and frets, as in E3 instead of the typical "6th string 3rd fret" we get from a lot of other people doing these things. Subscribed!

Donovan said in an interview that he taught Lennon and McCartney how to do the Travis pick in India, when they were studying transcendental meditation under the Mahareshi Mahesh Yogi. Lennon used it for both "Julia" and "Dear Prudence" on the White album, and McCartney adapted it and wrote "Blackbird" on the same album. Mia Farrow was there at the time with her sister, Prudence, who was so dedicated to learning to meditate that she stayed in her room for much of the time. Eventually Lennon and George Harrison were sent to try to persuade her to come out because everyone was getting worried about her. Lennon later wrote "Dear Prudence" about the episode.

Wow! Great job on this. After playing for 50 years, I'm finally learning some finger picking through these wonderful Lennon tunes. You are a outstanding instructor, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skill.
  • Seriously I think you spent some serious time with the Fab 4. You nail these songs and your guitar playing has such an authentic Beatles sound. I have learned alot watching these videos. Ive been playing Norwegien Wood for 20 years & today finally learned how to play the song correctly. Thanks so much. I like the sound of the that Taylor guitar your playing also.

We are very happy for you! We noticed Julia and several other videos you made were placed on the Official John Lennon Facebook page a while back. It is an honor to be following someone as talented and recognized as you.
