Full highlights from the Aquatics Centre in London as South Africa's Chad Le Clos defeats Michael Phelps at the last to win Gold in the Men's 200m Butterfly Final on 31 July 2012.

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

I hate when they talk about how phelps made a mistake and not talk about the good work that le close did .... it's impressing ; good job chad
  • I wish the commentators would stop focusing on phelps and give le clos the credit he deserves
  • I don’t see any mistake, I See a South African who did Everything to win!
  • @jayseth
As a South African, born and raised in Durban (just like Chad), this is probably my fave Olympic moment next to Penny Heyns in 96, and Wayde Van Niekerk in Rio 2016. Chad beating the greatest ever was such an underrated achievement. The commentators sounded disappointed
  • @jackcore6969
Absolutely horrendous commentators. So biased. Even when Le Clos wins, everything revolves around Phelps losing.
  • @nsmith5026
5:42 Look at these 3 strokes from Le Clos. Unbelievable power. This is what gave him the final edge over Michael. To think he did that in the final leg of the 200 is amazing. Well done Le Clos.
  • I'll always be proud of this moment as a South African....Chad Le Clos did us proud πŸ’ͺ🏽
  • @winniepisces
Chad didn't breath at last two stroke. This led to faster speed at last 5 m.
  • @woundedryhmes
No matter what, Le Clos didn't give up. That's the spirit! He knew he was racing with the best in the world, but if he hadn't done the last strokes as fast as he did, he would be the 2nd. Well done!
  • @volo455
As an American, it gave me such chills to see Le Clos completely lay everything out on the line in that last 25 and come up with the win! He totally deserved this with Phelps giving him all his motivation over the past however many years... great job Le Clos.
  • @HausdorffLover
5:40 the few seconds after this are just insane!!! how chad gets himself ahead, mind blowing.
  • @mr.meeseeks8567
I guess you could say Phelps was "Clos" to winning.... I'll leave now.
  • @khwezi_bass
"Phelps made a mistake" Ohh shut up! We can also say that Cavic made a mistake in the 100m Butterfly at the 2008 Beijing when Phelps won by 0.01 seconds. Give credit where it's due - Le Clos had a great performance. Stop focusing on the fact that Phelps got beaten, what's more important is that Le Clos, period!
  • when they show the underwater cam you can see le clos looking at phelps and matsuda to see what he has to bring for the last 25. Then he just put down his head and went. Absolutely stunning swim
  • @dhirshg
A 20 year old from Durban, South Africa beat the best Olympian of all time - super proud!!! Biased commentary though and not giving credit where it is due!
  • @Estframa
Stupid commentators, you can literally see at 5:41 Le Clos pushing himself and giving his all to win this
  • Almost brings tears to my eyes. The passion of Le Clos. What a career he has had. Powers waning now especially in the face of Milak, but undoubtedly a great of the sport
  • @guittadabe5214
Probably the race that gave Phelps the motivation to come back from retirement and go to Rio. This in turn allowed him to have such a tally of gold and Olympic medals, that I doubt I will see anyone come close to it in my lifetime. Thanks to LeClos! Talk about making lemonade out of lemons!
