What IS a Minion? That was the question I started with when working on this theory. I wanted to REALLY understand these little guys, so I started searching the movies for information. Well Theorists, I found more that I expected buried in the Minions and Despicable Me movies. A LOT more. So much that I can definitely say that the Minions in the movies are NOT Minions. I used to have a theory that there are multiple colonies of minions each were serving the most evil person of their area but gru found more once he made his plane and gathered them all ( let’s not talk about who the ones form Germany used to work for )

In Minions : Rise of Gru in the credits we see Gru manufacturing minions/ putting stamps on them so I think the new minions just confirmed your theory

Rise of gru actually proved this theory, because it takes place in the pre-Nefario period and it indeed does have only the original minions.

I’ve found some more evidence that this theory is correct: in despicable me 3 when the minions escape the prison a select few are sent to the top deck of the flying machine while the rest are in the big bag thing. I can see the original 240 minions on The luxury top deck and the new cloned ones in the big bag
