Fish & Chips Friday with Hushpuppies
DO YOU REMEMBER that good old southern cooking?
When I was growing up, my granny was my favorite cook. My mama was also a fantastic cook, but there was just something about being in granny’s kitchen. We all gathered around the table when we went to her house. I have made it easy for you to learn how to cook like my granny and mama did with cooking tutorials for every recipe in our cookbooks. You can see how to order these by visiting us on our website. Oh, and no difficult-to-find or crazy ingredients! Just simple ingredients and delicious food. I am a Southern girl born and raised in Collard Valley in Polk County, Georgia. We went to church on Sunday, school during the week, and the grocery store on Friday, and that was our life: no vacations, no camping, just plain old southern country people.
If you learn to cook like my mama and granny, you will become one of the best Southern cooks. Thank you so much for being a part of this dream of mine.
NOW FOR THIS FAMILY RECIPE:
Fish and Chips (Vol. 4 Cookbook Recipe)
FISH BATTER:
1 1/2 CUPS SELF-RISING FLOUR
1/4 CUP CORN STARCH
1 TSP. ONION POWDER
1/2 TSP. GARLIC POWDER
1/2 TSP. CAYENNE PEPPER
1/2 CUP WATER
1/2 CUP MILK
If you have a 4-cup measuring cup, use it to mix the batter in. Mix the above ingredients with a wire whisk and set aside.
1/2 CUP SELF-RISING FLOUR
CORN OIL
Cut fish into 1" strips and lightly dredge in flour. Preheat a skillet with 1" oil. Put a little batter into skillet and once it sizzles and floats the oil is ready. Keep oil at a medium temperature. Dip fish into batter and place in skillet carefully with tongs or meat hook. Turn in two minutes and cook on the other side for another 2 minutes. The batter will be golden. Put fish on a plate lined with paper towels. Use the extra batter to make crunchies to serve with the fish. Do this by drizzling it into hot oil from a spoon. Enjoy these with homemade potato chips!

Y'all make me laugh y'all remind me of my husband and I. He passed away in 2009 from small cell lung cancer and I didn't know what I was going to do without him. We had 2 children a boy and a girl they were both married living in their own homes but we had adopted 2 little girls one was 2 and the other one was 6 months old when their mother was killed in a car accident. They were actually our granddaughters our son is the father. After he died it was rough on me and the kids the girls were only 8 and 10 when he passed away. They are 26 and 28 now and one has 3 little ones and the oldest one doesn't have any kids. She developed type 1 diabetes right after my husband passed away it was rough but God has helped us deal with a lot. God bless y'all. I don't know why I opened up to you and told you my life story because I never opened up to someone like this but maybe it's God's way. Thank y'all God bless y'all ❤️

I love Dukes mayo! I have to admit we get fish from our local Coney Island. I love to make my own battered fish. Hubby and i are the only ones that like this! I remember alot of years ago going on dates and always getting fish and chips! Always a safe order! Not a mess to eat in front of your date! Still love fish and chips to this day! Great video!

My family went fishing a lot. We lived down near the gulf of Mexico. Now I live in East Texas. I do miss the fish you catch in salt water.

I had some wonderful dear friends that lived on signal mountain and in Chattanooga but they have passed away. They were wonderful people. I still have a few more friends in Georgia I love it but I haven't been out there in a few years cause of my health problems. I'm doing better and I would love to go back to Georgia up in the mountains the people are so nice and respectful

Hi Tammy & Chris! My Daddy and brothers used go fishing all the time. They would bring home Brim and Crappie. Mother would fry them. It was so good. Seeing you and Cris cooking brings good memories back. Thank you!

I like fish if it doesn’t taste fishy 😂. I know the spotted trout is a mild fish. I’ve caught that down in Florida and tried it….it’s yummy. Our family kids go back to school Aug.14th. Here in Virginia. We will be getting some of Betty this Friday. This video was last Friday I was recovering from Covid. My first time ever having it. Gordon Ramsey 😮 wow 🤩 is this cook off where he’s nice 😇🙏🏻. Not yelling I pray not. Well prayers you make it on there 🙏🏻. Hey remember you’re nose was itching in this video….going forward your company was the kids and the cats . From storm Betty. Chris made a comment company is coming 😂❤. Love y’all.
  • When your nose itches they say it means you're going to get kissed. 😊
