the David Fray recording has such total intensity, passion and most of all joy for Bach and this piece. It is so enjoyable to listen to! I keep coming back to it over and over. This version is accuracte, but just absolutely reserved.
  • Una versión muy personal de esta gran pianista llena de finura y musicalidad, para disfrutarla muchas veces.

The choice to end so delicately in the 1:12 - 1:26 section is hilarious in contrast with Fray’s exuberance. Both are interesting takes.

Sencillo, bello y sin pretensiones innecesarias.

Many years ago I went to a performance of Maria Joao Pires with my father when she played in Haarlem ( the Netherlands ). She was very young by then. You can learn from her playing the piano that she plays because she wants to convey a musical message and that she doesn't play because it is her profession. I have learnt that from my teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam who was very known in her homeland Spain : Almudena Cano. She was a pupil of Jan Wijn and she obtained the "Prix d'Excellence" by performing the First Piano Concerto of Johannes Brahms and with Jan Wijn playing the orchestral part of the piano concerto.
  • It's amazing to me how different performances of the same work can bring out completely different emotions in me.  I love this piece so much, and this performance is divine. It's not my favorite, though; not for lack of artistic brilliance, just because I prefer a slightly different tempo in Movements I and III.  Check out Awadagin Pratt's performance or David Fray's go.  Thanks for posting this, and giving me another set of lenses through which to see this great composer's work!  Cheers!
  • Una versión llena de sensibilidad y finura.Escuché, en un casette que yo tenía, una versión de Elliot Gould de la misma intensidad y delicadeza. Nunca más la volví a encontrar.....

Simply wonderful! That was (on my opinion) his most important message.

An attractive performance from a fine pianist, but my personal preference is for the versions by David Fray and Murray Perahia, both available on YouTube.

Gould always seems to get the right tempo. But in this movement, Ms Pires does Gould better. I prefer it played a bit slower than the more rushed Gould version. Allegro means lively but not rushed.
  • De todas las versiones que escuche de este concierto, pienso que esta es la mejor (a comparación de la de David Fray, es tremendo pianista, pero es muy acelerado)
