My queen ants have died and I found them covered in a swarm of mites who were devouring their dead bodies. I break down the mystery of how I believe the queen ants, whom I was trying to create a supercolony with, died, and where the mites came from. I also share some good news in this episode. Hope you enjoy the video! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution. #mites

Not a single one of these queens being fertilized is extremely unlucky. And the one that kept her wing knows true royalty needs a cape.
  • @AmaroqFan
Until I stumbled on this channel, I never really gave ants a thought. Your passion for the wonders of their simple yet crazy lives has even rubbed off on me. Keep up the amazing videos, please!
  • @MrRandompie
One winged ant queen Hella cool. Hope she keeps the wing throughout it all.
  • @FruityGroovy
Call this queen "Jenova" after the character in Final Fantasy VII, as she is the "mother" of Sephiroth, the One-Winged Angel (which would also serve as a nice name for the colony)
  • Just want to say, I'm not an ant keeper and probably never will be, but watching these videos every week is such a highlight. I find these ants and the way you care for them so fascinating and I'm so glad you do what you do. Keep up the good work. AC Fam!
  • Sad to hear about the golden girls. But it's neat to see a new big carpenter ant colony coming together. And the 555 ants are always so cute. The young, still light ones are particularly adorable.

Oof, I'm sorry to hear so many Queens died at once, worse and very unlucky to know that not a single one had mated. Perhaps caught too early in the nuptial flight? That tragedy aside, I am so happy to see the native carpenter ant species is starting to found itself and do well in the darkness. And the more exciting news to see Species #555 is doing well under your care too! I do have an idea for the big 5 mil video, why not do a video talking about/showcasing the most popular/most interesting ant species from around the world? Even ones you haven't raised yourself yet, a "World Tour" if you will. Personally I'd love to see your take on some native ants from my country, Australia.
  • @Lisamj714
You know, every time you talk about the older colonies like the Golden Empire and the Fire Nation I feel like it wasn't that long ago! Thanks for continuing to share your passion and make these videos.

Man im so Lucky my first colony hasn't surcommed to any of these grizzly deaths. I am grateful that these queens helped to remind me that things can go badly. But keeping the bad outcomes in mind is what makes it so great when the good outcomes happen. Hope the rest of your ants stay safe and healthy!

You could have some colonies compete with each other in a "Who can devour quicker" contest for the 5M special. Give them the same amount of food and watch them work. Ants swarming is some of the most interesting stuff to watch so having several colonies swarm in the same video would be a highlight for sure
  • @Ohmega369
A great 5 million subs milestone video would be to look back on all the years of this channel, and to celebrate all the colonies that have gotten this channel to where it is today!
  • @TheJenmarloh
Farewell Golden Girls we salute you. This channel has gotten my OH and me into keeping ants. Just got our first European Common Black ant queens (I made the mistake of naming them and now I'm really attached), hoping the first batch of brood start to hatch soon :)
  • @g1arnet
For the 5m subscriber milestone video, how about an ant drawing/art competition with public voting and the winner gets a colony named after them? Not sure if you've maybe done something similar before :) Thank you so much for sharing your passion and experiences with us all, and so beautifully ❤
  • @mittensfastpaw
That sucks but I'm glad your other colonies are doing well! I hope next year you can get the Queens you want and grow a healthy new colony. :)
  • @darwinskeeper421
I'm glad to see you have a native carpenter ant colony starting. I have a soft spot for carpenter ants, partly because I started watching the channel shortly after a nuptial flight in your room led to capturing a bunch of fertilized queens that led to the Redwood Warriors and Ebony Army, both released into the wild. I also appreciate the size, as the larger carpenter ants would be easier to watch.
  • No matter what your 5m sub video is about.. you should try and put together a nice long hidden video with 3-5 different ant colonies, a few minutes of each. I miss those with the nice soothing music and just the ants being ants. 🥰
