Should Christians Use Essential Oils?

In this brief video, I follow up on my previous video about crystals with essential oils. I give my balanced thoughts as best I can about essential oils as an ex-new ager. Are they okay for Christians to use? Do essential oils actually have any power? As Christians, is there any reason we should or shouldn't have or use oils? Many new agers attribute power and healing to certain oils, and even some Christians do as well. Does this mean they should be avoided at all costs?

  • I get bad migraines, and a mix of lavender, peppermint, and lemon applied on the bridge of my nose and behind my ears helps. God created plants for food and medicine. Thank you for your balanced approach Melissa. It is very much appreciated.

I use essential oils as part of a holistic lifestyle to help with common issues (bug bites, allergies, antibacterial uses) etc). I usually don't take medication if i can help it. God made these plants and I use them thanking Him for providing it. I appreciate your perspective.
  • Isaiah 38:21 Isaiah had said to Hezekiah’s servants, “Make an ointment from figs and spread it over the boil, and Hezekiah will recover.” Thinking everything we do is sin leads to a life of misery
  • @paige7012
I used to use young living but then I noticed all their new agey terms and switched companies. I love my essential oils!! I use them for their medicinal and aroma therapy, not the pseudo science witchcraft

I think essentially oils are good for topical uses. I love lavender and citrus for baths and cleaning and skincare. But i definitely don’t think it can cure mental issues or cancer or bring you luck.

I was saved from the New Age and I know exactly what you are sharing in this video. I know to many others who may not have awareness of the new age that such things would hardly be thought of, but it definitely is... The Lord is so wonderful to save us... 😢❤️❤️❤️
  • "They can be abused and misused" such a true statement. God made these plants and some do have properties that can help with some medical conditions. You just have to remember that they are not God but come from God. I am a fan of them and I think they do help with health combined with modern medicine.

Thank you for your balanced viewpoint on this. It's so true humans can make an idol of anything!

I am a dog walker and one of my clients is certainly in the new age. See seems to sell essential oils, has books that are on meditation, she has books on spells, books about Greek deities, and was a surrogate mother to birth children for a family who paid her to bring them to term. She knows that I am a Christian and I’m graduating with an MDiv in apologetics and ethics. Thank you for letting me know about the signs of someon in the new age. I’m praying for her and a moment where I can share the gospel with her.
  • I swear by essential oils for my health. I can't take prescription drugs because I'm so sensitive to them, but essential oils have really helped me with my health. Oils can help you with a lot of things but I don't use them to attract spirits. Everything depends on your mindset and how you use them.

I love orange blossom. I put it in my humidifier. Helps with my concentration. I also use eucalyptus when I have a cold. Imo they're fine to use so long as you don't buy them from a new age shop. It's normal to like things that smell nice.
  • @motlalepuleM
When I was younger there used to be peppermint oil at home and when we had a blocked nose it would help. It was only there for such purposes
  • I've lived 33 years without using essential oils.....makes me wonder how essential they are
  • Basically I just want to smell like a Christmas tree in winter and a citrus stand in summer 😆

Essential oils actually can be dangerous if they’re misused, as people can develop sensitivities or allergies to them. People who promote them as cure-alls may try to claim this is just an effect of the body “detoxing” or whatever, but it is definitely not normal to be breaking out in rashes, etc. One thing to be aware of is that some oils can increase photosensitivity, which can lead to bad sunburns.
  • @steveking1660
Not crazy at all that your olfactory response changes you body and brain chemistry from anxiety to calm/peace.
  • Amen. YL and all the other companies that have these mystical blends are purveyors of the new age and Christians need to be aware. I love the way the oils smell and smell does effect the mood in many ways. Thank you for your balanced perspective.
  • Thank you Melissa my pastor discussed something similar to this with idols. He said it’s how we used these things. Great message. Thank you Melissa hope you have a blessed day
  • LOL, right when you said, "A story...about two girls, who used essential oils...to ATTRACT things to their life," I instinctually eye rolled so hard
