How German winemakers turned disaster into a good year

Last summer, floods inundated western Germany, killing nearly 200 people and devastating the Ahr Valley. Local winemakers whose vines were decimated raised money by selling "flood wines" – bottles whose labels were soiled by mud. The effort has raised $5 million to support the local industry, and raised awareness about winemaking in the region. Correspondent Seth Doane reports.

    Sad that happened to them. On the flip side, I had never heard of wine from this region… and now I’d like to try it, muddy or not. So their campaign is successful and I hope they recover.

    Speaking in a engineering capacity, mitigation areas are a strong defense against catastrophic flood. A satellite image of the highest watermark during the inundation can give a analysis of where to trench rivulets. A cascading feature can be incorporated much like how we here in California anticipate heavy rains. Think lockes with different elevation changes. If executed properly, it can add a dimension of natural beauty that compliments the region.

    Some better glue and waterproofed labels would have solved part of the problem. They should think about making those changes, as there is gonna be more flooding soon.
