I was the librarian at the Ecole biblique in Jerusalem for nine years, so this lesson is very interesting to me. It makes me nostalgic, actually.

Im super excited to see this series starting up, Im fascinated with the Ugaritic texts and early preabrahamic yahwism just from a purely acedemic perspective. Im an Odin worshipping heathen so I have no religious reason but Abrahamic religion is so Underpinning to modern culture that seeing its roots and syncretisms are interesting to me.

A few years back I taught a brief introductory course to Ancient Near East history. I wish this video had been available then as I would have reccomended it.

Israeli jew here, these are so interesting. It's a different take on the history I know. You add so much flavor to my brain. Thank you

Catching up on all your old episodes. Can never have too much ancient history!

The more I learn about early civilizations in the eastern Mediterranean the more I’m convinced the Old Testament is more of a collection of half remembered stories that made it out of the Bronze Age collapse from a bunch of different groups and then embellished upon. Even the name El used by Hebrews later as a name for their god at some points in the Old Testament is the same name as the Canaanite chief deity.

Nice man. Really appreciate your video and research. Great video! I was waiting for you to start a Canaan series...it's so under publicized IMO I have a peculiar fascination with this period and tend to take the approach that the "strict lessons and interpretations" of Semitic traditions are quais-allegorically preserved accounts to periods...for ancient historians, this was all they had in it's nascencey as a recorded "study". With this approach, I have found much more sense and alignment in ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts which our modern archaeological findings and anthropological studies. In addition to the layer of not being privy to the actual spoken lexicon and thus connotative linguistic expressions and "memes" as it were, they didn't record with scientific accuracy and obviously the dates and numbers are skewed, but we can say there are historical memes that were recorded. It's so cool to get more information on a very bygone period, it's mind blowing we find such old sh'! thx

Wow one of the best videos I’ve seen on ancient Canaan and also one of the places I am most interested in. Looking forward to the next videos on Canaan especially some of the history of the biblical period.

In the same period (of the bronze age colapse) there's an evidence in Europe of almost complete supplementing of the older hunter gather population by the yamnaya culture from east and evidence of plague. Whether it was brought by the yamnaya people or they just settled the empty lands it's still speculative.

It's a fascinating region. I first heard or the Jericho skulls from the book An Anatomy of God which does a good job of contextualizing the Bible in its Canaanite context.
