SpaceX moved the Chopsticks and carriage to 39A. They were moved onto a temporary work platform where they were connected and then lifted onto the tower. The Chopsticks will be used to stack and catch Starship and Super Heavy.

It feels like overnight there's suddenly a starship tower at 39A 😬

Chopsticks at boca chica are 4 sections long, and the lifting arm/ point is located under the second section. While the Chopsticks at 39A have 2 sections only, which means it is half the length. Spacex just decided to cut the length, maybe the third and forth section are useless for lifting so they can cut the weight.

The reason the chopsticks are shorter for 39A is because their function is for lifting only. The chopsticks at Boca chica seem to be for lifting and catching. This theory will be confirmed or otherwise when the 3rd of chopsticks are built for the 3rd tower currently in construction which I hypothesise is for catching only (and will be much simpler and many many miles away from pad during the experimental “catching” trials)

If there was a Nobel Prize for engineering design, it would have to be awarded to SpaceX for the design of BOTH the OLT and the OLM! It gives me goosebumps watching how this is designed, installed, tested and ultimately will be used to send Starships into space...hopefully all the way to Mars and beyond. The concept(s) alone are worthy of The Prize!!! Thank you guys for covering this momentous event!
  • Holymoly crazy to imagine that every time a booster is going to land these little sticks will catch it Gonna be lit to see it for the first time

I always find it impressive to wacth this kind of actions. It is impressive with which accuracy they can use a crane / cranes to get such a heavy load in place. Probably for the crane driver (not sure how you cal such a person) quite normal work but it impresses me every time

What amazing coverage NASAspaceflight. So awesome to watch speed up like that.
  • My theory is that Florida tower 1 is the launch tower for stacking and launching two stage (booster plus starship) and that the second Florida tower (seven sections) is going to be the catch tower and only needs to catch one piece at a time, as booster will be back in under 10 minutes but starship will be up for hours or days.
  • I remember watching almost live the first pair of chopsticks being installed onto the BC tower and all the time thinking "will it work, will they succeed, is it actually possible". Now it's already like "yeah, they got it".
  • @thisisnotajoke
I just realized what might be going on at KSC regarding the Mechazilla(s): * 39A Chopsticks are shorter than at starbase * Segments for another tower are already assembled at roberts road -> maybe the 39A tower is just too close for comfort to the 39A Falcon Pad and other (non-spaceX) facilities so that the current tower is only for launching and not catching. They will build a second tower in a "safer" area for catching.

Thanks Patrick and the whole NSF team! I wish SpaceX would give more access for photojournalists to cover their Florida operations. This is history in the making and it should be documented.
  • @markhuebner7580
Great photography! A zoom of the people making the nuts & bolts connection of the chopsticks and carriage to the tower would be very illuminating. (Perhaps prohibitively expensive?)
  • @Akitene
Shorter arms allow for quicker action. Could be useful to catch the booster and/or the Ship when it returns.

Love seeing all this heavy equipment being moved around by a couple of guys, and a pickup truck.
  • structure on spmt passes by... Me: meh... Human enters frame Me: goddamn... The sheer scale of all the SpaceX things always gets me (although I've seen it a million times) Crazy engineering. I've got the utmost respect for all they are doing!
