Khazad-dûm, or Moria, was the greatest dwarf kingdom in the history of Middle-earth. Today, we cover it's entire history, from its founding by Durin I, to its reclamation by King Durin VII - long after the Return of the King. It's doors were made by the greatest craftsmen of the Second Age - the dwarf Narvi and the elf lord Celebrimbor. It would rise to incredible heights until the awakening of the Balrog of Morgoth, Durin's Bane.

  • Still one of the best lines of the first movie: "Let them come...there's one Dwarf in Moria who yet draws breath"
  • Honestly it's very unsettling to think that the Dwarves didn't only dig so deep that they found a balrog, but also broke into the territory of the nameless things.
  • @ayoitsyayo
Celebrimbor really wrote “Celebrimbor was here” on the door
  • @speedyspeeds
The world is grey, the mountains old, The forge's fire is ashen-cold; No harp is wrung, no hammer falls: The darkness dwells in Durin's halls; The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria, in Khazad-dûm. This was soul shaking.

5:10 I never realized how deeply symbolic the Doors of Moria were: 7 Stars of Durin, Durins Crown, 2 Trees of Valinor, the Emblem of the House of Feanor and the letters for Celembrimbor, Narvi and Durin A true Tolkien craftwork. When you think how much beef the Elves and the Dwarves had in the centuries to come …

The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria in Khazad-dûm. But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere; There lies his crown in water deep, Till Durin wakes again from sleep. ~Gimli son of Gloin

This seriously makes me wish Tolkien had written more on the Dwarves. They have to be one of my favorite races in Middle Earth, and yet compared to what we know about the histories of elves and Men, its not much.
  • @mbernard80
That part where you perform Durin’s song is a masterpiece. You really put a lot into these videos.

There are many Tolkien related channels on YouTube and a lot of very good ones but this one is hands-down the best in my opinion. Keep up the awesome work!
  • @untruelie2640
The poem about Moria which Gimli recites in the Lord of the Rings will always be one of my favourite passages of the book. :)

The Moria sequence in LOTR Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, is my favourite chapter in the whole trilogy. I took my kids to see it back in 2001 - they were blown away. Well done Peter and the hundreds of artisans who created the Moria props, characters and scenery. They truly multiplied the vision of JRR Tolkien. Oh, and the Orthanc confrontation between Gandalf & Saruman was brilliant too.
  • Thorin Oakenshield would have been so proud to have at least seen a glimpse of Khazad-dum. His final sacrifice at Erebor was only the precursor to a catalyst of events that would lead to the defeat of Sauron and the eventual liberation of Khazad-dum from all the corruption.

Nobody tosses a dwarf -Gimli lord of the glittering caves

"At some point prior to the Fellowship, Aragorn had entered Moria for an unknown reason." That's so interesting, and that is why I love Tolkien so much. There's so much mystery. Why was Aragorn there? The image of him wandering Khazad-dum alone is so cool.
  • @Menthur
3:48 Remember: It was the master smith Telchar of Nogrod who forged the legendary sword Narsil which was wielded by King Elendil and cut Sauron's finger. So basically without the dwarves Sauron would've never be deafeated.
  • @coletrain41
11:46 Wait what!? Gandalf and Aragorn actually entered Moria on their own!? Aw man, that is some horror story level stuff right there
  • @zaimhassan6490
Moria was one of the best part of movies. So glad you did a video on this.
  • Is it just me or the Durin's song is one of the most epic and powerful poems I've ever heard. There's so much depth, richness and emotion in it.
