Remember this as the day you almost caught CAPTAIN John Paul Jones.

Many people say JPJ was a pirate, several folks of the Early US say JPJ was just a fightin’ man, a fightin man was he
  • This song is the earliest known example of what would later be known as "coping and seething"

"Every officer in our Navy should know by heart the deeds of John Paul Jones." - Theodore Roosevelt, 1906

He was officially pardoned in 1999 by the town of Whitehaven ,England . When you do such things in a time of war on behalf of a nation ,it's not piracy ,it's cunning Naval manuevers

Fun fact, when he wanted to kidnap some nobody earl in Scotland, when Jones found that he was away he instead conducted negotiations with his wife and son, legitimately. And after being presented a small token of silver, the crew wanted to burn and pillage to which Jones let them take exactly 1 gold plate with their crest from the palace, and he later bought it and just gave it back. The only pirate to buy his own loot to give it back.

"I have yet begun to fight!" - John Paul Jones' response to receiving a demand to surrender as his ship was burning. He went on to win the battle.
  • JPJ is one of the few successful pirates after the 1730's. He even had his own flag made by the Dutch so that they could help him. His national ensign was destroyed at sea and so the Dutch just made one for him because they couldn't let him into port with an enisgn

'Leave her Johnny' but you've docked on a Bristol pier and your crew are calling for you to leave your old ship

I love how the song and the title, picture, and background audio tell two different stories. The song is the British gearing up to go after JBJ, getting the crew prepared and looking forward to the task ahead while listing everything John Paul Jones has done and is doing... Meanwhile, everything else says JPJ just did the impossible, destroying the largest and most heavily armed type of ship for the time with a fucking Rowboat, and probably is killing the rest of the flotilla while he's at it as the crew of the British vessel lose their nerve in the face of a man who seemingly cannot be stopped.
  • I do enjoy the thoughts that go through a man seeing such horrors, what goofy and strange turns the mind goes to when in such combat

Brits: "John Paul Jones is a Pirate!" Americans: "Yeah and he's badass!" Brits: "I made this song called Yankee Doodle to make fun of you!" Americans: "I like it! Thanks!" Brits: "You're just a bunch of savages! We beat Napoleon!" Americans: "We fired once more and they began a-running down to the Gulf of Mexico!~🎶"
