"Notwithstanding" is probably a word you've seen before, but perhaps don't know what it really means or how to use it correctly. What I like about notwithstanding is it can be used at the beginning, in middle and at the end of the sentence. Fat as I am, I managed to win the race notwithstanding 🏃♂️

0:26 Absolutely, if I were to name my top fears in speaking English, they would include: the word stress uncertainty (for words that I have never had to say before, but I know what they mean) and... register mixing.

This one is a bit tricky for me. I've heard it before but wasn't exactly sure how to use it, but thanks to your video I now feel more comfortable with it and I'll surely use it in my next essay. Thanks a bunch, great lesson as always 😊❤

Notwithstanding, I seldom watch your videos I always learn something new. Thank you.

For all its formality, “notwithstanding” can be pretty handy when used as a conjunction, because the result phrase has far less words as against the phrase “despite of the fact that…”

Can 'notwithstanding" stand on its own in the sentence or does it have to be followed by a noun phrase? The sentence below has been taken from the Corpus of American English. According to the self-categorization hypothesis (Turner, 1985, 1987), the process of self-categorization is the core of social identity. Notwithstanding, Phinney (1990), in her review of research on ethnic identity, noted that, " although ethnic self-identification is an essential starting point in examining ethnic identity, it is not specifically assessed in about half of the studies reviewed " (p. 504).

I've always liked this word, but didn't know how to use it, thank you! 😊 Funny how similar to Spanish expression "no obstante" it is (to withstand is something like resist or prevent, right? Similar to "obstar").

Hello Ben, thank you for another marvellous video! I have one question to you and I hope you know the answer. I was wondering whether both parts of the writing paper are assesed by the same person? I'm afraid that if I use the same grammar structures and vocabulary for my essay and report/proposal I might lose marks 😢

Why "the project go ahead"? I would say "the project to to ahead"......
