Health minister Maria Caulfield has told Sky News the demands of junior doctors are "unachievable" and "not affordable".

They announced strike action on Monday, calling for a pay rise of 26% to bring earnings back into line with 2008 levels.

She urged union representatives to get "back around the table".

Ms Caulfield, a former nurse, admitted wages in the profession "aren't fantastic".

As long as there is a single tory uttering the words 'tax cut' there shouldn't be a single minister uttering the word 'unaffordable'

They can easily close tax loopholes and better fund public services, but they choose not to. It's a political choice. There was a lot of money to give to their mates during the pandemic, most of it wasted and unaccounted for.

The minister basically lied. The multi year settlement was meant to be open to renegotiation if conditions changed

It's funny that she mentions going back to nursing if she wasn't an MP like they would welcome her back after being part of the government that is trying to deny nurses a decent salary.

Not unaffordable, it's a political choice not to pay them, funds can be raised by taxing the wealth of the super-rich.

Waiting to see Sky News headline "Executives Bonus Unaffordable".

I’m just disappointed with Kay here. She has the government out all the time to parrot the same lines and she offers up zero scrutiny. Idk if she has some warped sense of what balance is, but just allowing the government to avoid questions and spout the same falsehoods or purposely deceitful rhetoric is how the Uk ended up in the position it’s in, and ultimately it does a huge disservice to her viewers.

Seriously! I was married to a hospital porter 13 years ago , we only survived due to government benefits back then when he was getting a 1 per cent pay rise on wages that didn't cover our basic costs ! The marriage broke down due to financial stresses that meant we couldn't keep up with our mortgage payments and things have only got worse since then. I have seen stories on our local news where GPs have not been able to afford housing so have not taken jobs leaving rural areas without the healthcare the need . This is a mix of low pay and not enough housing stock both of which are governmental problems !

It’s Doctors & nurses we all need not over paid M,P,s that only turn up for P,M,s question time ,the other day 12 turned up or a debate ,disgusting at £ 86 ‘ooo each ,

solved it we Should pay MPs the same wage as nurses they think its fine we will clear up a bunch of money then
  • Unaffordable? They are saving lifes and they berly aford to live or any mental relaxation, and mp as long with political class, as the electricity companies and gas companies get such a huge amount of money monthly to get us poorer and poorer, we will never agree
  • @JJoandrew
She left, she must bloody understand surely!
  • @Boomtrooper
Maria Caulfield "Come round the table and talk to us"; BMA statement "We only considered strike action because Steven Barclay refused to meet up to discuss pay and conditions".... 🤔

Also she makes comment on pat Cullen and Scotland calling off strikes. That's cause they upped 22/23 and offer and put 23/24 on table. In England and in NI no such proper offer has come hence why strikes are happening there. Talks absolute garbage.
  • @jajamisfud4152
Worth every single penny of the 26pc though. The fact they pay has stagnated for a decade has put the Tories in a pickle.
  • @petermizon4344
THE AMOUNT OF MONEY TORIES HAVE WASTED HAS MADE THEM UNAFORDABLE, IF A FOOTBALL MANAGER WASTED THIS AMOUNT IF MONEY ON CRAP PLAYERS HE Would BE SACKED , Listening Tory BOYS?????
