Hiking the Fimmvörðuháls Trail - Baldvinsskáli to Skógar

We hiked the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls Trails back-to-back in early July 2024 starting in Landmannalaugar and ending in Skógar. The weather was unexpectedly splendid for the entirety of the trail, and we were able to comfortably tent camp the entire time.

This video covers the first day on the Fimmvörðuháls Trail where we hiked from Básar to Baldvinsskáli. This trail is definitely a lot more rugged and exposed in comparison to the Laugavegur Trail, particularly on the first day with a very chill downhill on the second day ending at Skógafoss - the Game of Thrones waterfall! This day was almost all downhill (descent of 1,002m or 3,288ft) for a total of 13.7km (8.5mi). The hike is well worth the effort! The beginning of the trail starts in a very lush, green landscape and tops out on a desolate, volcanic landscape rife with snow and ends in green, meadering hills and a billion waterfalls.
