Oh finally something I know! Seán you’re not wrong saying that Koreans name their kids similar to that of parents because sometimes we do, but I think what you’re talking about is 돌림자. I don’t know what English equivalent of it. It’s a part of a name that’s shared among siblings in the same generation that’s predetermined in the family’s genealogy to distinguish the hierarchy of generations in the family tree. For example let’s suppose in a Lee family a father’s name is Sung Hun Lee and a paternal uncle’s name is Jae Hun Lee. Their 돌림자 is Hun. Then the sons of Sung Hun have a different 돌림자 signifying that they’re in a different generations from Sung Hun. So if he has two sons named Hyun Jun Lee and Ki Jun Lee, then they’re sharing ‘Jun’ as a 돌림자. Daughters traditionally don’t get to have 돌림자 in their names because they are considered ‘outsider’ as soon as they’re married so our ancestors were like “eh why bother?” However 돌림자 isn’t the rule of the land, as more parents these days name their children whatever they’d like rather than sticking to the tradition while some more strict families are honoring the tradition. It is typically a 3 syllable name that consists of a family name and the second and third are the given name. One part of their given name is typically a generational name.
