Mega Man 8 has always been viewed as the “oddball” of the Classic series- but has anyone ever sat down to examine why that is? I have! Just now. Listen to me talk about that. Right now. In this video.

  • i liked the part with the sexy woman who mentioned the moai head
  • @BigGnome
Megaman 8 graced us with the deeply written and masterfully voiced line of dialogue "I'm Aquaman but you can call me handsome guy" and for that, we salute it
  • @whiz8569
Holy cow. The edgy sword robot actually says "Nothing personal." I can't get over that.
  • @Kumaclaws
The Robot Masters have so much personality in this game. Whether it’s Clownman’s smug quips, Aquaman’s obnoxious little brother energy, or Astroman having a full on panic attack during his fight, it really adds to 8’s vibe.
  • 33:09 Both him and Magic Man would be Tumblr sexymen in an alternate universe where Mega Man is on the same level of popularity as Sonic and Pokemon
  • @babyjeff
i'll never forget how this game went out of its way to put more of a focus on the story only to name the evil energy source and main plot device, quite literally, "evil energy". it has had no other canon name.
  • played the japanese version of the game, so the voice acting was audibly good to me and eletricial communication was on my mp3 playlist always. (even though I've no idea what they're talking, and also just being a mystery with the shop item usage). 8 was also my fav too as I found it "hard" to get back to the older megaman games apart from 7. The opening anime animation for 8 tricked me in thinking this is the quality of animation to expect from that ruby spears megaman series when I first chance upon it.

Finding out that 8 was almost universally disliked was a real shocker for me considering everyone in my childhood friend group considered it their favorite out of the original series. I had gone through most of my life assuming everyone had equal love and appreciation for 8 only to find out the opposite when everyone praised the return to 8 bit in mega man 9. I am at the very least thankful that mega man and bass got made before capcom decided to can this brand of mega man.

i adore hearing people talk about bad games in a positive light. like "this is bad, but here's why i love it". a++ video would watch again

Its so strange, because when I first played this game on the anniversary collection I hated it. I played it multiple times, hated it every time. It was by far my least favorite mega man. Then, a few years back at this point, I played it on the legacy collection, and I had so much fun. I was in disbelief as I found myself seeking out every bolt just so I could play the game for longer. I still enjoy playing it and I now consider it one of my favorites. It just had a complete 180 out of absolutely nowhere for me and I am not upset about that at all.
  • @ash_rock
My favorite YouTube videos seem to be long, semi rambling analyses of some media that I vaguely was aware of but didn't have anywhere near as much love for as the video's creator. Would love a series from you like that. :P Fits perfectly into my video watching niche.
  • @ReeseyPuffy
I’m not as passionate for classic mega man as I used to, but 8 is one of the few I still find interest in revisiting. It’s just so funky and absurd that I can’t help but come back to it. Also aqua man and clown man are the fruitiest robot masters ever, I adore their vibes so much.
  • @koikat6638
I really love this video. There are so many franchises where my favorite iteration of it is objectively one of the worse ones and this not only validated me, but gave me so much energy. It is so fun hearing you gush about things you love!
  • @KarakatoDzo
Im with you on liking this despite its shortcomings. The games chock full of 90's charm even if the rubbery animation does get in the way of the game feel and some pf the sfx can get too cutesy. Its the same reason why I still hold Mega Man & Bass close to my heart along with the collectible cd bios. Hope you do more videos like this even if it isnt about the mm series.
  • @phase623
I do spriting and code work for a fighting game celebration of the series called Mega Man Arena, and we added sword man about a year ago. I took that opportunity to look through sword's stages to see what could be made of them for a casual fighting game setting (it's a platform fighter so we try to incorporate stage hazards sometimes). Doing this made me really realize how messy and unexplored the hazards and mechanics in 8's stages were, BUT this also allowed me to explore them better, for example, taking the dungeon style, 4 challenges first half of sword's stage, and making it into basically the smash bros wario ware stage, where the stage can reform to recreate one of the 4 challenges in that section. It's hardly utilized in the real stage, but now we were able to fully flesh it out (and it honestly fits a fighting game better than the original game). So while 8 does have thousands of gimmicks it introduces and abandons in the same sentence, I've ended up really appreciating them, since it fits our game's format for stages really well.
  • @BugsyFoga
As a sucker for high quality pixel animation, Mega man 8 definitely roped me in with that alone.
  • @RainePhoenix
One of my favorite innovations from this game, that for whatever reason, never made a return, is the ability to always utilize the Mega Buster, regardless of which weapon or item you've got equipped. Why hasn't Capcom brought this feature back?
  • @Woogwoogus
I've been going through a sudden phase of me replaying Mega Man 8 again recently so it genuinely makes me glad to see other people also loving it for what it is One thing I absolutely love about it has to be the overall character design of the Robot Masters (Also Duo) of this game. They're all so simple yet complex at the same time that leads to them all scratching my brain a special way that makes me very happy, same goes for the art direction and all the silly little cutscenes Thank you very much for making this, very fun to watch, and I hope you have a good day! Edit/update on this that I feel like is good to mention since I'm watching this video again [6/7/2023]: I got my boyfriend to play through all of this game and he just finished it about an hour or so ago! He may not like the game (or the Mega Man series as a whole because he's not good at it), but it still makes me happy that he at least tried and I am very proud of him for playing it all the way through without quitting and never touching it again We now mutually bully each other by calling each others favourite games bad it's great
