Blue whales are on the brink of extinction. Despite being the biggest animals to ever exist on Earth, they remain a mystery. To protect them, we first need to understand them better.

In our 14th Planet Wild mission, we’re using drones to drop camera robots on whales. Our goal is to find out what a day in the life of a blue whale looks like.

Special thanks to Cascadia Research for providing us with additional footage, taken under NOAA permit to John Calambokidis.

This is my favorite mission so far. I remember when we heard the whale songs for the first time it was incredible. I really do believe that that recording inspired the Star Trek movie " The Voyage Home" where they go back in time to bring back two Humpback Whales to save Earth from being destroyed by an alien probe. I know different species of whales but the whole point of the movie was that we have to protect all animal life because the loss of one species of animal could bring on the destruction of all life on Earth including mankind. This is one of the reasons I am glad to contribute monthly to our missions. I just wish I had been there from the beginning.
