Lyrics:
I steal a few breaths from the world for a minute
And then I'll be nothing forever
And all of my memories
And all of the things I have seen will be gone
With my eyes, with my body, with me

But me and my husband
We are doing better
It's always been just him and me
Together
So I bet all I have on that
Furrowed brow
And at least in this lifetime
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We're sticking together

And I'm the idiot with the painted face
In the corner, taking up space
But when he walks in, I am loved, I am loved

Me and my husband
We are doing better
It's always been just him and me
Together
So I bet all I have on that
Furrowed brow
And at least in this lifetime
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We're sticking together
Me and my husband
We are doing better

  • The best thing about this song is that Mitski didnt cut out the breaths she took between lines, so you can sing along with her
  • This song can be interpreted as either a sad or happy song.... love that
  • Many people have said that this song is about her unhappiness in her marriage, but as someone who's facing a ton of depressing crap (including the loss of many former friends) the way this song comes of to me at least is... different. Right now, the only thing keeping me going is my boyfriend. We are both in deep shit, we both regret so many things, and fear for the future. Still, we stick together; to each their own struggles, but we're there for each other, listening, accompanying, and adoring one another throughout the storm.
  • In this life, it's just you and Japanese-American indie pop singer Mitski against the world.
  • I really think this song is about her lying to herself. She's saying she has a perfect husband, a perfect relationship but the sigh at the start says otherwise. She's lying to herself to convince herself that she's fine and that she's happy.
  • Reading the comments, I was surprised to see that the song is generally considered sad. To me it was always a happy song. Like two people who are struggling in their relationship but still working hard to make it work, not giving up on each other and what they have together. That's how I interpreted the "we're getting better" and the " in this lifetime we're sticking together". Just two lovers dedicated to each other, even in the hard times.
  • There are so many interpretations in the comments that I absolitely love but I daydream of a scenario in which shes talking about how despite the ups and downs of their relationship along with their seperate hardships in life, her husband will always be there for her. Even when that giddy feeling of being newly in love fades, they'll always stick together.

Listening to this to ignore my parents arguing in the other room 😎
  • You can’t make a song happy and sad at the same time Mitski: hold my husband

i think the song is about existential dread. the first few lines express this notion - she thinks about how meaningless and tiny her own existence is, how it will all be gone soon and how her life amounts to nothing more than stealing some oxygen from the earth. but when someone she loves walks in, she can forgot these feelings and her life has some meaning. she can “bet all she has on that furrowed brow” and knowing she is loved makes it bearable to live. even though her life is ultimately meaningless and she’ll die, she and her husband are sticking together in this life time. it’s a song about how the existential worries of existence are quelled in the presence of people we love.
  • In an interview with the 405, Mitski says this about “Me And My Husband”: …I think a lot of marriages are like that because that’s what it is; it’s no longer about being in love. It’s really hard to stay in love and keep the spark. When you get married and you’re with someone for years and years, it no longer becomes about infatuation or having your heart aflutter. But the song is just about “you know what, this may not be love anymore, and I may be unhappy, and I’m going to die one day and this is just going to be my life.” But then turning around and saying “this is the decision I made, and you’re the person I chose, so I’m just going to stick with you. We have our problems, but this is our life and we’re going to live it.” And that’s what it’s about.

Nobody asked but my interpretation of the song is that she's living a happy yet unfulfilled life. She is a stay at home wife who takes care of the house while her husband is the one who works, she loves him and he loves her but she can't help but feel like she's missed out on what life has to offer. Possibly from marrying at a young age and getting stuck in a routine, she would do things differently if she could go back but she can't so she's resigned herself to this lifestyle. I get this from the fact that she talks about how she's stupid in a corner until her husband comes home and loves her and about how they will at least stay together in this life. Sorry for if this comment isn't coherent.
