Balenciaga is one of the most prolific brands in fashion, and in this video we look at its history dating back to the very beginning. We learn how Cristóbal Balenciaga defied the odds to start his own couture house, the Nicolas Ghesquière years, the Alexander Wang years, and of course the arrival of Demna Gvasalia. In talking about Demna, we’ll discuss how he founded Vetements and went on to revolutionize Balenciaga, which is now one of the most popular brands in world (even among major stars like Kanye West). This is really one of the craziest stories I’ve covered so I hope you enjoy!

Clearly, Cristobal Balenciaga would be totally mortified to see what they have done to his brand and name today❕

Cristóbal Balenciaga was “the master of us all”, in the words of another fashion icon of the era, Christian Dior. Also Coco Chanel, not very given to making friends and free praises, said he was the only authentic couturier. Unlike his contemporaries, he was able to design, cut, assemble and sew a dress from beginning to end. In his own words: “A good couturier should be: an architect for patterns, sculptor for form, painter for drawings, musician for harmony, and philosopher for measure.” summarize perfectly his vision of the trade.

"People will wear just about any logo if you tell them it’s a high end." The most important sentence in this whole video. He played on people’s stupidity and vanity, but for some not in that order.

Balenciaga will never be the same without Cristobal. Today's balenciaga is just a brand name with a bizarre soul.

To me now knowing who Cristóbal was I will have a totally different appreciation of the name Balenciaga.

Balenciaga was from a village not far from where I am from. There is a Museo de Balenciaga in his beautiful hometown of Getaria…..

Not for nothing if Christobal was alive he’d probably be mortified by what’s happened to his house. I know brands have to modernize to stay relevant for the times, but it reminds me of Dior and Saint Laurent who both were alive when new creative directors took over and they hated their designs. I personally think Ghesquiere’s Balenciaga was the best. I still sigh every time I think about those collections. This newest couture collection was amazing and modern I loved the models and the inclusion of mens wear

Over the years, I’ve developed my own fashion style, I call it Costco Chic.

I have never been so in depth with balenciaga. I enjoyed every minute of this video and this is by far my favorite channel. Keep it up man!
  • Would be interested to hear your take on the scandal that has recently broken and how you feel about the brand now.
  • @LeBeautiful
Never would I thought Balenciaga existed THAT many years ago.
  • @TASconfidential
Balenciaga is turning over in his grave witnessing what’s happened to his brand.
  • One of the most striking, relevant fashion videos that I've seen.

Christobal Balenciaga would have been devastated to have seen what became of his name. "I will not prostitute my Art", he said, when he was asked to design Prêt-À-Porter. Well, what I can see is that they prostituted it for him.
  • In good hands with Demna?? An interesting statement considering what he has done for the brand lately.
  • @EveningTV
It is a shame what they have done to this man's beautiful legacy. Maybe he knew what he was doing to just shut it down while he was ahead.
  • The Brand Took a dive…it’s went from a High End Brand to a Social experiment Joke.. Selling out to a Big Parent Company Kering Nephew Fumbled the legacy RIP THE KING Balenciaga
