Would you get a Tesla Model Y or a Toyota Rav 4 Prime? I go over all the details on how much it costs me to own a Tesla model Y as well as predictions of 10 year ownership vs a similar sized car like the Toyota Rav 4 Plug in hybrid.
I was shocked at the results!

The takeaway from this video, owning any new car is expensive as heck
  • Insurance has been my biggest con of owning Tesla and EVs. As they say you don't know how good of an insurance you have until you file a claim and the traditional insurance companies tend to be better in customer service. I'm hoping Tesla Insurance revolutionizes insurance just like they did with EVs. Tesla is a safe, mass produced, and low maintenance car; insurance should be cheaper.

Even if cost was same - not dealing with Toyota dealers trying to squeeze every dollar out of you is worth going w a Tesla - here in GA they are still trying to sell at markups even in this economy

one year into owning my tesla, i have come to realization that owning a tesla is not cheaper. but at least i can avoid regular maintenance. it is a waste of time. that is a plus.

just registered my model 3 2024 model. costs 113$ for the usual 2 year coverage. from long island, new york. 35 miles from manhattan. my insurance is about 110$ a month or $1320 for 1 year.
  • Siskiyou County, CA 2022 Model Y LR registration is $326/yr. Insurance through Tesla is $109/mo. Our power is $0.17/kWh. (I charge 75% of the time at home) Superchargers in my are range from $0.32/kWh to $0.44/kWh Yes, my Tesla is lower cost to operate than my previous car. A Toyota Prius. Gas prices in NorCal are currently at $4.93/gallon with Gas Buddy app discount.
  • Hate doing any maintenance or getting gas. Having more time with family is worth it.

The Wall Connector is NOT an essential accessory. The Mobile Connector kit for only $250 woks just fine for most users and requires no electrician installation fee. You can get 33 miles range per hour of charging from a standard dryer outlet. 200 miles in 6hr overnight is more than enough for 99.9% of people! Been using one myself for ages and it cost only the $250, plus $60 for a "Y-splitter" to avoid the hassle of swapping the dryer/MCU every night (as we only had one NEMA-14-50 wall outlet)

Michigan registration this year for our 2023 model Y was about $500

Factor in resale. Tesla resale drops like a rock because no one wants a ticking time bomb $20,000 battery job. After about 10 years either junk the Tesla for very little money or invest into a new battery that is worth more than the value of the Tesla.

GA resident here with a ‘21 Model 3. GA is a very friendly EV state surprisingly. My state EV registration is $230 this year, not cheap but not terrible. Also, I got a $250 rebate for installing a wall connector at my home and GA Power offers year-round off-peak discounted rates for home EV charging. My insurance is $180/mo tho.
  • Dude CA is expensive! I'm paying $60 per month insurance .13cents per kwh electricity (actually free bc I have solar). And no extra registration fees. Tesla in Vermont is a win-win.
  • @pit5000
in my old gas car my tires would last 50-55k miles. my model 3 seems to be on track for 40-45k
  • @guy7622
Whew! 😂. Lots of work. Good video.
  • I have a 2023 Tesla model 3 rwd . I live in AZ and registration is highest the first year of ownership but drops about 15 percent every year after. I paid $776.68 the first year and $672.16 the second year. It pays to hold onto your vehicles longer in AZ.
  • @vaddimka
I'd also compare Model Y and VW ID.4, I'm not sure about maintenance costs, but it will probably be cheaper in almost everything else. And it drives nicely, still has coasting mode, a little bit higher etc.
