Soundbytes: Latin American leaders called for a full review of Venezuela's election results on Monday (July 29) after President Nicolas Maduro and opposition rival Edmundo Gonzalez both claimed victory in a tense weekend election. Nine Latin American governments will call for an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) permanent council, according to a joint statement published on Monday. The governments of Argentina, Costa Rica, the Dominican (July 28) Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay express "profound concern" over Sunday's election , according to the statement. The national electoral authority said just after midnight that Maduro had won a third term with 51% of the vote - a result that would extend a quarter-century of socialist rule.
