Exploring Historic Kingston upon Thames | 4K 60FPS Walking Tour

Publicado 2023-10-29
Back to the UK today for a stroll around Kingston upon Thames. A Saxon market town, Kingston is historically very significant as the site of the coronation of the first king of England. And if you watch this video, you can even see the church where it happened!

Today, it's one of the many storied metropolitan centres surrounding London, and joins peers such as St Albans as being a market town that's pleasant to live in or visit for a day out. I came here to visit a friend mid-pandemic and quickly became quite fond of it for its mixture of old and new. You can feel that there's a lot of history here, but there's also a Wilko. Can't ask for more than that!

This walk starts at the gates of Old London Road market street before sweeping around to the train station and moving through the many pedestrianised streets to the historic market square. We'll pass the All Saints Church, where Athelstan, the first king of England was coronated, as well as walking in to some random mayoral procession. This was completely by chance, but I guess it's one of those fun things that really does make it seem like a place from the past. Finally, we'll end up crossing Hogsmill River and walking along the Thames itself before ending on Kingston Bridge.

Couple of shoutouts here: There was a nice woman who chatted to me when I was setting up by the train station who told me a little about the local area and was very interested in what I do. She was meeting some friends from a historical society or something like that and said that there were plenty of people who'd want to chat to me. I don't think she'll ever see this, but, on the off chance she does, sorry I didn't take you up on your kind offer!

If you're interested in the monkey statues, they're part of the Chimps are Family exhibition by the artists Gillie and Marc, and you can find out more about it here: kingstonuponthames.info/what-s-on/news-offers/chim…

The telephone boxes on Old London Road are part of another art installation, Out of Order. You can read about it here: kingston.nub.news/news/local-news/the-story-behind…
