Upon leaving the Marine Hotel in North Berwick on Sunday, Phil Mickelson announced to his wife Amy that he was going out to “bring home the Claret Jug” and win The Open Championship.

No matter that the American started the day five strokes behind Lee Westwood, he was as good as his word - finally earning the Champion Golfer of the Year crown at Muirfield.

Phil's 66 was one of the finest rounds of golf ever played.

After all his US Open close calls he deserved this one. I was glad to see him do it.

Let's not forget Phil was 5 back going into Sunday and he won by 3, at age 43 and even with the 3 green jackets, this has been his career defining moment thus far. Incredible win.

Tip of the hat to The Open for sharing this. Never tire of Phil's devilish smile.

Great tournament. Couldn't happen to a better guy.

'Mickelson's assessment was more accurate than his tee shot.' lmao

You really have to admire rory’s honesty. We have to appreciate and respect that.

I always see this as Phil's greatest tournament, more than the 2004 Masters. I just never thought he had the game to win the British Open and he proved me wrong.

So wild that I followed this man's journey, especially at the majors through so many heartbreaks and close calls before that first Masters, and now looking at everything he's done since. Quite astonishing just how competitive he was for such a long time. He has 23 top 3s and 11 runner ups to go with the 5 wins (in Major championships). He had a span in which he finished 7th or higher in the Masters in 15 out of 21 years and had 9 top 3s! Think about that. That's having 9 legitimate chances at winning a single tournament, let alone one where the best in the world are playing at the top of their game. Similarly, he's had comparable stretches where he's been in the top 5 or 3 in at least ONE major for like 15 or 16 years in a row almost. And as good as this round was, 2016 vs Stenson was even better IMO, just somehow outplayed by Henrik. What a privilege to have been watching all along!

crazy how good matthew fitzpatrick was at 17 years old , 2 years later at 19/20 years old he won the british masters , he’s only 25 , wouldn’t be surprised to see him hit his prime here soon and win a major or two

“Alright! Alright!” I bet I’ve watched that clip literally 100 times. And I laugh every single time.

Lmao Rory: "Sometimes i just feel like im walking around there; unconscious...brain dead." 😂
  • You know you're a legend when your highlight video of winning the Open Championship concludes with Two Steps from Hell music.

Jaime Diaz, you said winning the British Open would be the greatest moment in Lefty's career. That is if he never won the US Open. But Phil Mickelson winning the PGA at 50 years old and his sixth major trumps everything in his career.
  • Very awesome tournament, Phil! I appreciate what you've done in golf so much more now. Thanks to The Open as well for posting this!!
  • @martysykes3221
I’ve always said, if you can win the Open, you are a stud! You have to have all the shots to win that tournament and win against the strongest field in any tournament on the planet.
  • Jimi the legend. Once one gets past the Spanish way of expression one finds that he is a true competitive gentleman. I bet his stogie and sherry collection is unparalleled.
  • @gustavotoro7938
Nice documentary. This was the tournament we though Phil was never going to win, but he did win it.
  • As a physical therapist, I’d recommend more golfers think like Jimenez and stretch more. You’d have less back problems and play better golf!👍🏼🙏🏼
