Friends,

We decided to do another deep dive today — this one on Trumpism and fascism.

With the election less than five months away, and Trump escalating his fascist rhetoric and signaling his intent to use federal troops to round up undocumented people inside the United States and put them in camps, we felt it important to show the close parallels between Trumpism and neo-fascism.

Please pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, and, if so inclined, take our poll.

What I’ve noticed about Fascists is that they seem to have a high quantity of fear and self loathing. And a low quantity of empathy and intelligence.

I'm from the Netherlands. Around 1960 I did watch the excellent weekly German documentary about the development of the Nazis in Germany from 1918 till 1945. Living at 10 km of the German border, we did receive German TV Transmitters. What I see now in the USA is frightning close to what I learned from the documentary in 1960.

The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe. For the axe was very clever and had said "Look, I too am made of wood - I am one of you"

I find it very depressing that "the media" won't call a fascist a fascist. Glad Rachel Maddow on MSNBC at least did.

When fascism comes to America it will come wrapped in a flag carrying a cross," Sinclair Lewis
  • America has a very serious problem with single-issue, poorly informed voters who will at least tolerate if not welcome FASCISM. That is fatal to the country.
  • For me as a German person it is hard to understand how the parallels between Hitler and Trump are so underestimated in the US. Thanks for your work. Keep it up.

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.”   --------― Benito Mussolini

Thanks God for Robert Reich and all the sane, decent people in the world who aren’t blind to Trumps BS.

My mother lived in Europe during WWII. She told me several times about how the tone of right wing broadcasters, starting with Rush Limbaugh, mirrored Hitlers tone and rhetoric in his speeches.

Warning signs that someone may be fascist: claiming to be able to easily and quickly solve difficult problems, but not able to go into detail about the solution, lying in general. This is from Rick Steves address of fascism in Europe.
  • My wife's grandfather (RIP) was a NASA engineer and a Korean War vet, and in his later years, he and I spoke about the rise of Trump. Over and over he emphasized "The first time I heard him speak, I said to myself, 'I've heard this language before, and I thought I would never hear it again!'." I am sad we lost him, but I am glad for his sake that he didn't have to experience Jan 2021. What Trump and his supporters have done to America is an affront to the sacrifices made by generations of people like him.
  • Education in the US is lacking. We don't learn introspection, accountability and the greater good. And fascists like that. Yes misogyny is a profound part of the domination.
  • "When people tell you who they are, believe them "-Maya Angelou-Centuries ago,Ben Franklin warned that those who are willing to barter freedom for security, deserve neither, and risk losing both -
  • The thing that bothers me the most about allegations about elections is that Trump is insulting the hard, patriotic work of thousands of ordinary Americans who take time to make sure elections are run legally and correctly. Ordinary Americans need to have confidence in each other. Trump denegrates this!

Speaking for myself, Mr Reich and Ms Lofthouse, it is an honor to "put up with you." Your words, your time, a huge thank you. May God bless the United States of America.
  • I always wondered how German society fell to fascism., how the German people allowed it , until this happened & a large group of Americans are allowing it to rise here. I wish I could have just been allowed to wonder , without getting a first hand representation of it in my own country.

It may have been mentioned here, but one aspect of fascism is that big corporations and the government are very closely associated. Our laws permit lobbying of congress using money indirectly. One of the most egregious methods is allowing 'dark money' donations which the Supreme Court created by their "Citizens United" decision. The 'corporations are people' concept is ludicrous, and seems to apply in this discussion.

How about a law that disqualifies anyone convicted of a felony from running for president!?!?
