Highlights of Heat 4 of the Men's 400m Individual Medley during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.

In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.

Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

I was at 2012 and watched this race, they make it look so easy to swim so fast but very few people know how hard they had to work to get to this level. I know because my children are swimmers
  • @shreyas5137
Actually, the underwater Cameraman was faster than all of the swimmers.

Phelps still seemed to be swimming fast in this event even by being ten seconds slower than his own world record.

Now I have my bachelors degree but I still remember Michael Phelps as the reigning champion at swimming in a general knowledged text when I was in grade 5 or 6 I can't remember

If only state prelims for me were like this. With me everyone was like “let’s go as fast as we can in the prelims, then go faster in the finals”

All that woman commentator talks about is how great phelps is, completely disregarding the quality of the other swimmers. She does it in every video.
