Sega Model 3 emulation never officially happened... until now. In a DF Retro special, John Linneman examines Model 3 emulation found within Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased his name. Daytona USA 2 and Fighting Vipers 2 are the emulated titles in question, with AM2's classic racer stacked up against the OG arcade version and Supermodel PC emulation. Meanwhile, Fighting Vipers 2 on Dreamcast takes on Like a Dragon's Model 3 emulation. The port is renowned for its accuracy, but does it deserve the accolades?

  • Sega needs to release a dedicated collection for all the various arcade games that have never gotten home ports. Lord knows they have quite the back portfoilo to do it.

"To put it in perspective, would be like designing a game that only runs on RTX 4090".  Perfect analogy, John. This was truly what made arcades special in the 90s. Purpose built hardware. It's why so many home consoles at the time were trying to claim "arcade graphics" in their advertising. It was the gold standard in terms of visuals at the time.

The way the rear tires smoke up in Daytona USA 2 is still visually impactful all these years later. Sure we have advanced particle effects today but give a prize to the AM2 visual artist who designed it back then!

John, when you make a video you really BELIEVE IN, nobody else even comes close to the content you create, period. When you started your deep dive into model 3 vs everything else I felt like I was getting taken back in time to the full glory of my teenage years. All the wonder and excitement flowed through me exactly as it did back in the day when I was first introduced to all these games. Truly, THANK YOU.
  • @bojador
I would pay full price for a compilation with Daytona, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter/Striker/Tennis and other gems. Make it happen Sega.
  • I still remember vividly when Virtua Fighter 3 hit arcades. It literally felt like I was looking at something that had just time traveled from the future. Even after that I still wasn't ready for when I saw Daytona 2 in action for the first time. It was insane.

Great video, John. One nitpick: front/rear speaker balance is adjustable in Supermodel using `-balance` or `Balance` in the config file (-100 to 100). The Model 3 has two SCSPs for generating sound, each producing different stereo outputs. In Daytona 2, one of the SCSPs drives the front speakers and the other the rear speakers. We mix these equally in Supermodel, which appears to drown out the rear speaker audio. But you can weight it more heavily toward the rear speakers to fix the problem.

I wish they'd do an AM2 collection, or a sega racers collection.
  • @kenneld
It can't be overstated how incredible VF2 looked when it first came out and what it was like to be a gamer in those days. We went from the original Double Dragon to VF2 in 7 years.

Come on Sega just give us the Sega Model Collection, various games from the 90s -00 model boards. Across all consoles and PC , that's what we really want
  • @gm_matthew
One of my favourite games of all time... I started contributing towards Supermodel partly because I wanted to get Daytona USA 2 running as closely to the arcade original as possible. One of my proudest achievements was improving the network emulation so that you could connect up to 16 players over a LAN (which you can't do in the Like a Dragon version).
  • @DatBeastard
Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is suppose to add Spikeout and Virtua Fighter 3, so that's more Model 3 titles that will make for a home console (vanilla VF3 was never ported). And if they ever announced a Model 3 collection, or even a Model 1-3 collection with System 16 and 32 games, that would be an instant purchase.
  • @RetroBirdGaming
Thank you for making these. I know they take a ton of work. Huge fan of the DF Retro videos.
  • @AgentHeX_0007
One thing you missed is the draw distance/pop in on Daytona 2 Model 3. Its been fixed on the Yakuza version, no more catch fence pop in etc.
  • Definite props to Hitoshi Iizawa, plus the help from his buddy Ryutaro Hayakawa from way back in the CRI days, for their work on this port. It's been exciting to hear mentions of this "passion project from a single programmer who worked on the AM2 ports to Xbox 360/PS3 around 2010". I suppose the hope is that he keeps working on Like a Dragon ports as he has been since Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. EDIT: I've just been informed Iizawa was a programmer again on Virtua Fighter 3tb Online, and Hayakawa was one of the system programmers.

Your day automatically gets better when John posts a DF Retro video.
  • @kingotime8977
It would be nice, if they would re-release these titles as standalone digital titles, like they did in the PS360 times
  • @EAprima
Digital Foundry - SEGA's Ryuga Gotaku team announced that Virtua FIghter 3tb will be included in the 8th Ryuga Gotaku/Yakuza game. Also, they are contemplating on releasing a Model 3 Arcade compilation but in order to receive it, we'll need to make A LOT OF NOISE for them to recognise that there is a demand for it in the west. The louder the noise for all model 3 games with ROLLBACK NETCODE, full multiplayer online, Crossplay, all model 3 games with ranking modes and so on, the higher the chance we'll get it. No noise, no get.

I wrote the rendering engine for the supermodel emulator. Ask anything :) The reason that the like a dragon gaiden emulation is too bright is because the lighting is clamped. In daytona they used an unclamped model which on the back faces will actually subtract from the ambient lighting. Since supermodel is open source .. I do wonder how much 'inspiration' they took when writing their own emulator. In supermodel if you create a custom 57.5hz resolution, supermodel will use this and work at the correct original frame rate, judder free. You don't even need a special screen to do this, it works on my nothing special 1080p asus display.
