Customer states: NEW Alternator Smoking! (Mechanic Hack Job) Infiniti G35 3.5

Published 2024-07-26
This car came in with a new alternator that had failed immediately after installation. After replacing the burned up alternator, we found that that the engine was overheating and the A/C system was not working and hot air was blowing out. After inspecting the engine bay, we found brand new cooling fans but the fan wiring was hacked together with scotchlok connectors and the connectors were melted.

Your ability to find and fix problems always amazes me
  • Now that you have successfully let all of the smoke out of the wires they should be fine. Nice to see Lauren, she is definitely the captain that keeps your boat afloat. Me thinks the lady knows a lot more than she lets on. You keep on truckin and we'll keep on watchin.

The other problem you got, they run double the current through the harness which overheats the wires

Good Day Ray. I worked for Campbell and Biesemeyer boats, as their electrical installation and repair technician, for two years back in the day. We used 3M solid barrel crimp connectors, when splicing wires. You are absolutely correct to use the soft point crimp on these connectors. My only suggestion is, to make sure, you do not use split barrel splicers, as those are very unreliable if not crimped properly. Love watching your work and enjoy the banter with your audience, Best wishes for you, Wife Unit and all your family.

The name of this video should've been aptly titled.., "How To Keep Your Cool" Good easy going / laid back prognosis by utilizing processes of elimination, visuals and testing. Find the problem and then eliminate the problem that caused the issue in the first place. Good job Ray, keeping it real and simple. I like the way you think.

Just thought. I work as an electrical technician on railway signalling. On the wiring we use zip ties, but the serrations are on the outside. It was found the ties with the serrations on the inside cut into the insulation, due to vibration. Again. Just thought. 😁
  • The crimping tool is as good as the person using it. This happens to Ray so ✔️. The insulation on heat shrink crimped connectors will heal itself when heated. Thanks for a Great Episode.

if theres smoke...Its going to be a really good video!
  • @bblod4896
Great job. I'm glad you used the heat gun over the lighter method to shrink those wraps.
  • There are times when wiring problems can be a real test of patients. Just yesterday, I put on my car all new brass battery connectors. I discovered a bad wire. It took me 4 hours to fix it correctly because somebody long ago really had some inexperience. The car starts better now, the ole Chevy seems to have more power too. Good video RAINMAN RAY.

Bridging a fuse block with a clip lead… The old “penny in a fuse panel “ fix😂🤪 I’m with you all the way, but that move made me giggle🤠
