Just retired after putting in 37 long miserable years working in auto repair shops every single day. Don't miss it a bit, don't want to work on any more cars. Don't even want to drive the damn things, Hate 'em all now!!

In sailboat engines the old Atomic 4 flat head engine came with either a Zenith or Bendix branded carburetors based off of a tractor style updraft carburetor that had an adjustable main jet by turning a T handle that was connected to a needle which is kinda silly since unless you are trailering your boat up into the mountains at a high altitude lake you will never need to adjust the air fuel mixture if it is correctly set at the factory for sea level operation go figure the EPA put plugs over all the adjustments but de-plugging them was something all carburetor re builders have been doing since the early 80s at least i worked for a tune up shop in Atlanta and I serviced or overhauled a lot of different carbs over the years. The adjustable jets were only on the early model carbs for the atomic four later ones did away with that feature. In aviation there is a mixture control cable so that the pilot can control the fuel air mixture from inside the cockpit for changes in altitude modern computer controlled cars do this with the air temperature and manifold pressure sensors some MAP sensors also serve as barometric pressure sensors before the engine is started so the ECU knows before the engine even starts turning over the ambient outside pressure after the engine starts and the sensor starts detecting the pressure changes it only acts ad a manifold absolute pressure sensor other cars use a mass airflow sensor system to measure the actual CFM of airflow into the engine this input data stream then allows the ECU to be able to apply a pre programmed in memory look up table for the correct fuel injector duty cycle from a table of presets according to what those sensors are inputting to the ECU and also the ECU monitors air fuel ratio using O2 sensors located in the exhaust gas airflow stream in a closed feedback loop faster computers and wide band O2 sensors make even more precise control over fuel mixtures possible with direct fuel injection being able to fire the injectors two times during one combustion event. The fact that a lot of people have been driving smaller displacement cars for years now has I am sure has dramatically cut down on total emissions also.

As far as ignition timing for being able to start an engine the old T and A model Fords have a lever to adjust the ignition timing and you had better retard the timing before you try to hand crank the engine because if you forget it can kick back on you and break your wrist or at least hurt you. Small engines and aircraft engines both use fixed timing probably most marine engines do as well since a rapid acceleration is not needed in these applications there is not much of a benefit to having a timing advance in them as it only adds more things to fail and extra complexity. Static timing on old cars with electric starters is almost always set close to 10 degrees before top dead center (TDC) and it gets advanced from there on small engines a good compromise would be 26-30 degrees before TDC too far advanced and the engine will want to kick back on the starter system though without a compression release or the ability to retard the timing this can be rough on what ever is starting the engine too far retarded and the engine won't make good power and might tend to run hot as well.

Even working for a municipality with hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment repair tech cannot get the nonsense " specialty" tools.all that turns into is wasted steel and plastic being tossed when it should be repaired
