Kathy Bates has rightly gotten tons of praise & awards for her performance here, but James Caan did a fantastic job as well, especially in conveying the agonizing pain and suffering Paul is going through.

A true Stephen King classic. Kathy Bates is a treasure. She can do it all, comedy, drama, horror, suspense. I love how funny she can be and then is equally as terrifying.

In the book he doesn’t burn the book at the end he fakes it and then publishes the new misery book so she’s the only one that never gets to know what happens to misery.

The scary part of this story is how believable it is. When you look at murderers who were obsessed with their victims, such as Selena's killer, who was president of her fan club, or people like the guy who murdered John Lennon, it is very eery. Cathy Bates is so great in this, scary and sympathetic at the same time.

Amazing that Rob Reiner directed Spinal Tap, Stand by Me (another great Stephen King adaptation, but non-horror), The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and THEN did this film, followed by A Few Good Men. A great run of films. Your reactions were perfect. Kathy Bates totally deserved the Oscar she won for this performance.

No boring CGI, no worthless scenes or characters. It's a perfect movie.

Like everyone else, I think Kathy Bates was fantastic in this movie. But I also feel that James Caan did a great job in this role and is really underappreciated.

In his autobiography Stephen wrote how misery was about his alcoholism and how he felt trapped by it.

King said that Annie Wilkes was his cocaine addiction that he was trying to kick off at the time he wrote the novel. You could say that drug addiction is in a way an abusive relationship but I really like your take on it, that it could be an allegory of living with an abuser and the film really could represent that. About Annie Wilkes, that was Cathy Bates portrayal the one time sweet then without warning switching to short tempered as in the book, Annie is from the start presented as an unhinged psycho. I think the cinematic portrayal is very layered and Kathy Bates did an incredible job that 100% deserved the Oscar for best actress. King wrote the book Dolores Clairborne with Bates in mind after seeing her performance in Misery. Dolores Clairborne is more a psychological drama while Misery is more a thriller, but she agreed to play in the cinematic adaptation and she also superb in it. A word on James Caan. Being bed or chair ridden for almost the whole movie, he had to act more with expressions but it was fantastic, he really pulled it off and gave also an Oscar worthy performance. Buster was not in the book, he was created for the movie but his banters with his wife were so entertaining that it's a shame there never was a movie of those two solving cases.

The hobbling scene assured that I never hear Beethoven the same again.

Kathy Bates gets a ton of praise for this performance, and rightfully so. But James Caan did a great job also. Great movie. I like when you two do reactions together the most.

Kathy Bates is so good in this movie. For me, Annie Wilkes is one of the scariest villains in movie history because she seems so real.

Rob Reiner has really made some terrific films

One of my favorite adaptations of Stephen King's works, there is so much genuine tension and dread in this film. Loved seeing your reactions to Paul wandering around the first time and freaking out over the penguin, I remember reacting the exact same way when I first saw this 😂
