Jerusalem-based journalist and author Nathan Thrall has been awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his book, _A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy_. It tells the story of Israel's occupation of the West Bank through one Palestinian father's quest to seek answers and accountability after his 5-year-old son is involved in a deadly accident. We speak to Thrall about President Biden saying for the first time that he would not supply certain weapons to Israel to be used in an all-out invasion of Rafah. "It is too little, too late," Thrall says. "It is a step in the right direction, but the administration has said that it has not made a final determination even about these paused weapons." Thrall also discusses Israel's ceasefire talks with Hamas, anti-Netanyahu protests led by families of Israeli hostages, Israel's intensified crackdown in the West Bank, how criticism of Israel is conflated with antisemitism, and why debates over the future of a Palestinian state are an "enormous distraction from the reality on the ground" — that is, the Israeli occupation’s "system of domination that is extremely bureaucratic and elaborate, [that] has lasted for over half a century and [is] not going anywhere."

Thank you all for continuing to speak out for those who are treated like disposable pawns in a wicked game for full throttle dominance.

Nice interview with the Pulitzer price winning author. Thanks.
  • Thank you all for this report. I'm a longtime fan of Democracy Now, and I have followed the crisis in Palestine for many years., but I have not heard of Nathan Thrall until now. He clearly has much to add to this important conversation. I will now add him to my list of wise and knowledgeable resources as I continue to learn.

As an American of Palestinian descent, thank you for your bravery and humanity Nathan. Your voice is so powerful. The amount of disinformation has completely dehumanized the Palestinian people and many people are feeling helpless trying to proof our humanity.

I live in Germany and am absolutely furious about the way the political and cultural authorities are responding here to any criticism of Israel and Zionism.

This gentleman took the words right out of my mouth, when he expressed his thoughts on Joenocide Biden and our complicity in this genocide. It pains me that I am indirectly and thru my tax dollars responsible for the murder of so many innocent people.
  • Thank you so much for informing us as best and as unbiased as you can. Mr Thrall you have my deepest respect and I am wishing you to stay strong with an unbroken spirit as long as you are well. People need voices like yours and we need you safe. May God be with you!

America have no red line when it comes to Israel

Sincerely heartbroken, angry, and disappointed in the US handling/financing of a genocide. America's reputation has been severely damaged by this. We've never been a perfect country but that's no excuse not to try to be better for humanity. Agree with Nathan, the US could/should have pulled out a long time ago. Netanyahu said Israel will finish what it started. He's a true psychopath and has been purposely murdering civilians, denying that is wilful ignorance. Praying for us all, including the civilians of Israel and Gaza.
