Managed to get one of these out of a church's office for free. It hadn't been powered on in 18 years but everything was flawless. It had XP and I have dual booted Win98 for some legacy software. I was genuinely amazed by the design of the case and how easy it was to get in. The slide out of the expansion port blew my mind. Added a period-appropriate GPU and sound card and it's a great machine. If you're wanting something for late 90s/early 2000s gaming this is perfect.

These were the workhorse PCs in the early and mid 2000s

They're great machines. I picked one up in 2001-2002 when they were first going off-lease. I got mine off eBay at the local eco-recycler for $50. No Shipping! Because it was local! I ran Windows 2000 until around 2005, when XP service pack 2 had convinced me of it's effectiveness. I retired it in about 2007, mainly due to the 512mb memory maximum and the lack of an AGP slot. A 1ghz Coppermine PIII was a cheap upgrade back in the day and made a heck of a lot of a difference over the 600mhz chip I had in mine. I still have it, it's one of my "tweener" machines that I use for moving stuff between different generations of machines. It runs Dos 6.22/WFW3.11, Windows 98 and God help me... OS/2 Warp 3. There IS a Tualatin Powerleap upgrade to allow you to use the later PIII/Celeron server chips with higher clock speed and more cache. This requires you to revert to the A05 bios. There's also a Pin-mod you can do to allow you to use the bare chi, that's still available from a seller in South Korea. Neat Machines, well built. I'm keeping mine!

I just picked up a broken Dell Optiplex 400mh P2 in a G1 tower case. Planning to transplant my old Dell Desktop GX115 motherboard with a P3 933mhz into this case. Hopefully create an ultimate 2000 era sleeper PC. 😁 Only downside is onboard graphics, which I'm still puzzling over what to do with (on a smallish budget). 😕

I used a Dell optiplex GX1 from 2003 to 2007. They were great Windows XP machines.

I have one of these. Got it for free about three weeks ago, and I've decked it out since. I love working on the case. it's fantastic compared to other "mini towers" from the day. Had an HP Pavilion from 2000 and it was a piece of shit to work on. I have not had this work with more then 512 megs of RAM, but I haven't tried. I'm a little dry on PC100 these days. For gaming, mine has an ATI Rage AIW Pro and a SoundBlaster Live, and those run period correct games fantastically. I will admit it weighs like a thousand pounds compared to the Compaq I also got.

I have a desktop version p3. Got it for free back in 2005. Now after more than 12 years i powered it up again. Damn thing still works. My plan with it i to use it as a win98 machine because i want to have the dos option to use those old dos programs again. My machine has sound build in. Also i keep it. Gonna make it run again and restore it. Btw... also using my period correct compaq keyboard without windows key.
