Ballerina Mom Acted Differently Once She Separated From Husband: Counselor

A mental health counselor took the stand on Wednesday afternoon and discussed the sessions he had with ballerina mom Ashley Benefield and her husband, Doug Benefield, before she fatally shot him. During the first session, the counselor said the couple wanted to work things out, but Ashley started to act differently once she separated from Doug. She also allegedly let out frustrations about how long the separation process was taking.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
