So I tried playing ASSASSIN'S CREED UNITY In 2023...

In 2014, Ubisoft introduced the "next gen" Assassin's Creed experience which featured an overhauled parkour system, dense crowds, and even co-op. Assassin's Creed Unity was also one of the most infamous video game launches for its buggy, broken nature. So, with Assassin's Creed Mirage on the horizon, I wanted to return to Unity and see how things have aged.

Despite all the bugs at launch, this game was clearly ahead of its time. Still impressive even today, unfortunately these days Ubisoft doesn’t have the same ambition they had when making Unity.

I also enjoyed how stealth was more required in this game. I recall it was difficult to fight more than 2 enemies at one time compared to some of the other AC games where you could easily take on 20 guards at once.

This game’s atmosphere is still unmatched. Such a dense city environment and the ability to go in and through a lot of buildings made it feel so much more alive than most open world games.

My favorite AC game <3 best parkour, best combat (imo) best graphics, the most well crafted city, best side missions, best customization and of course co-op! Oh and I actually liked Arno quite a bit. His personality and humor resonated for me. My only complaints are the bugs and the story to be honest

All the bugs at launch aside, this was really pushing technology, the crowd system and animation blending was really awesome at the time and even today the game holds really well.

This game is amazing don’t care about the launch issues this game is still great story world gameplay and even the dlc

The combat was so good, the animations, parries and finishers were so clean and smooth, youd actually hit the opponents sword or whatever instead of glitching in and out of the person, and youd have actually realistic deaths and stuff but in the new AC games the combat is like playing an MMOrpg like runescape

Such a damn good game, especially now. Still more breathtaking and impressive than most new AAA stuff.

AC Unity with the ACU Fixes, and 60fps Physics Patch mods is easily one of the best assassin experiences in the series.

This is easily a top 3 AC game now after all the years

I like Matty's Freudian Slip at 10:43 when reading the back of the box, instead of "groundbreaking engine", he says "gamebreaking engine" lol. Hope for more of these during the big AC retrospective.

It was so smart forcing you to pick one main weapon. I remember playing as the rifleman spotting and giving sniper support while my friend went in close. It was cool.

Having read a ton about the French Revolution, know that the people were not bloodlust for the Ancien Regime. People were in fact sad when Louis XVI died because they loved Louis XVI, they were not “off with his head!” mentality. Alexis de Tocqueville, a contemporary source, explicitly says this in his book The Old Regime and the French Revolution. Here are two other books that back up my standpoint. The French Revolution: A Study in Democracy by Nesta Helen Webster, The September Massacres by Armand St. Just. All this to say that what’s presented in the game historically is better taken as fun content, some is accurate, but the big picture of the king should be taken with a grain of salt. This game made me a historian. Still my favorite game today.

Yoo Matty with the AC video! This channel is awesome for showcasing your tastes outside of RPGs

This is easily in the top three for how it presents Assassins and Templars. III is the go to in this regard because of how charismatic Haytham is written, but Unity has a more warts and all take on both groups that have parallels represented in each. The idealistic leader killed by his own side, the relative newcomer in love with their counterpart also seeing the shades of grey and the extremist who kills the leader. Both the Assassins and Templars have fractures within their hierarchies, people who hold the same ideal but not the same means to practicing it. Arno is reckless at points and makes his personal motivation a bit too known, but his initiative isn’t unwarranted given the timeframe he has to act on the intelligence he gathers. Unity is also notable for being the most focus on the love story, not inappropriate for the city of love. Here it’s intertwined with the Assassin plot, whereas for Ezio in Revelations his story with Sofia was more about him seeing a life after the Brotherhood. Origins would have Bayek’s strained relationship with Aya be a core part of their characters, but Elise has more presence in Unity than Aya did in Origins (although Aya getting less focus is more marketing saying women don’t sell, actually preventing a scenario where Bayek was stuffed in the fridge).

I'm replaying it. Love it so much. The beginning is epic.

I love this game so much, one of the best Assassins Creed's for me, i loved the feel of the Parkour, the Combat and the world and i loved the open ended Assassination missions
  • @CrashingSpyro93
I heard this game was absolutely terrible at launch but i didn't play it until this year and think it's really good one of my favorites.

I started playing it again recently I got got it as one of my first games on the PS4, I didn’t experience hardly any of the bugs but I never finished it since I got hooked to destiny 1. Replaying it on the PS5 it’s my favorite AC game after AC2. The parkour is awesome, the combat and the city is awesome

I played this on PC some months after the release, so I didn't experience that many bugs - actually it was like with current day releases. What I remember most about this was the awesome open ended assassinations where you could learn about things going on and eliminate the target in different ways. The very first mission going into the confessional was gold, then I also remember using the fireworks display to create a diversion for my assassination. Then, overall I think this game has such a good soul put into it - so many beautiful scenes between Arno and Élise, like in Versailles and the hot air balloon. And yeah, the murder mysteries told so many different stories. Of course it was also a gigantic map with probably too many icons and AC games still kept getting more and more bloated, unfortunately.
