I've got a Name was Jim's last studio album and this song was set to be released as a single the day after Jim died in the plane crash...RIP

On Thursday night, September 20, 1973 and just a day before the single for โ€œI Got A Nameโ€ was released, Jim Croce and five other people were taking off in a chartered plane from Natchitoches, Louisiana after finishing a concert there an hour earlier. They were headed to Sherman,Texas for the next stop on the tour, a concert at Austin College. Tragically, the plane crashed into a tree on takeoff, killing all six people onboard- the pilot, two of Croceโ€™s managers, a comedian, and one of Jimโ€™s band members. The accident was later ruled to have been caused by pilot error, taking off downwind into severe darkness and fog. Jim was just 30 years old.

Great song! Jim Croce was a unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Roller Derby Queen", "Rapid Roy", "Lover's Cross" etc.

    Beautiful song and beautiful reaction!

"Operator" is probably my favorite Jim Croce song.
  • @sammcbride2149
Jim didn't write this song, but he certainly sang it with enough conviction to make everybody believe that he did. It's a very inspiring song. It was written by Charles Fox (music) and Norman Gimbel (lyrics).

Beautiful song. His music and lyrics were simple but impactful. He was a story teller. Someone who is aware, guess today he would be called mindful. Thank you for reacting to it. Great analysis of the lyrics too.

I have been listening to Jim Croce since I was a small child. He was my father's favorite artist. My brothers & I have passed our love of him to our children. I loved hearing your insights. It makes me hear it in a deeper way. Thank you!
