Video: In this video, I’m going to tell you why you may get false blood pressure readings. Blood pressure is one of the most taken vital signs. Unfortunately, many people are doing it wrong, including some nurses. This can derail your blood pressure goals. If you want to see more blood pressure videos like this one, click the subscribe button and the bell icon. There’s nothing worse than doing the right thing while keeping track of your blood pressure and you’re getting a false reading. This can cause you to think you have high blood pressure, when you don’t, or the opposite, where you think your blood pressure is normal but it’s really high. False readings can play with your mind and your health because it can cause you to get the wrong treatment or no treatment at all when it’s really needed. I’m going to tell you things you may be doing or things that are wrong with your blood pressure monitoring equipment resulting in incorrect readings. The first thing is an incorrect cuff size. If your cuff is too small, your readings can be falsely high and if the cuff is too big, your readings may be falsely low. So how do you determine if your cuff is the right size? Most cuffs have a size range written right on the cuff. My cuff size has a range from 8.75 to 16.5” It’s essential to measure your upper arm to see if it fits into the range of your cuff. Take a cloth measuring tape like this one and wrap it around your upper arm while it’s relaxed hanging straight down. If the size of your arm is not in the range, you need to change your cuff. The 2nd reason you may get a false reading is a cuff that is too loose or too tight after you wrap it around your arm. Even if you have...

Another problem is when the nurse calls your name in the lobby of the doctor's office, you pop up out if your chair, hustle down a hallway, and in less than a minute your blood pressure is being taken.

The only problem with having your meter check by the doctor at a office visit. Most of the time, they do the blood pressure wrong themselfs !
  • @demenACE
Every time we got to the doctor's office, it always reads higher.
  • I’m a psychologist; in addition to ‘white coat’ HTN, which usually implies people are afraid of being scolded by their doctor — the cuff itself is a CUE that fuels people’s fear — oh my god, will I haveHTN? — and fear/anxiety can ALSO result in high readings. That is, the act of measuring itself can act as a cue and increase the reading.
  • I always have high readings at the doctors office. I've been put on a 24 hour monitor twice, 4 years apart, and my readings are normal. White coat syndrome maybe.
  • This information should be posted at the doctor s office because whoever taking your BP usually let your arm hang down not resting on anything to be at heart level
  • I also experienced the rush to BP check scenario. They call you in from waiting room, take your height and weight. Then walk to patient room and immediately take a reading. No time to settle my heart rate and the anxiety of it always being high at the office makes for a no-win situation. ** I often wonder----- Is it possible that the established blood pressure ranges for normal are mistakenly TOO LOW??? If everything needs to happen just right, maybe they are?? Consider: the cuff needs to be the right size, placed on you correctly, no clothing on arm, cuff at same height at heart, time to settle down after walking into office, limit conversation. Good grief sounds like a scenario for patient failure every time. But not for the pharmaceutical company selling the BP meds. WTH.

My doctor loves to hear what I learned on the internet.

I was taught this as an EMT in 1975. I am surprised how many nurses don't do this correctly. There is a nursing school near me that lost accreditation because of things like this.

This is one of the best YouTube videos on blood pressure I’ve seen! Very straightforward, very simple, very easy to understand. Thank you! (I’m going out to find a cloth measuring tape right now!)
  • To the point in a very calm & soothing voice. Great advice many thanks
  • @WJHandyDad
unfortunately 99.9% of medical care providers have no clue about any of this and I have gotten tired arguing with them that their little "one size fits all" cuff does not fit my upper arm and that I need a "leg cuff" for my arm
  • @technology_pro

Nearly every doctors office I've been in breaks these rules.
  • @suerimes3843
Interesting about not taking readings over your clothing. I never do this myself but have had this done by several health professionals!
  • @toke7560
I have NEVER yet seen a doctor who does it correctly.
