When a man who had no friends was asked why this happened, he responded, "Friendship is like a diamond. It's rare, expensive, and there are a lot of fakes. If you made one mistake, then a second and a third, at some point you would say, 'There are no real diamonds in the world. There are only fakes."
And another man added: "A friend is a person to be valued and treasured, but unfortunately there are rarely any friends in life you can really value."

I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone. (Source: Robin Williams)

Solitude is golden and not to be confused with loneliness.

To have one true friend is far more valuable then having a thousand false friends

Here’s what I heard not long ago. “The more people I get to know, the more I love my dog”. Truthful to me and my solitary life with my dog. Age 70.

Not having friends can also mean you are ok being on your own,it's more peaceful.

A true friend is someone who knows everything about you and still likes you.

Sometimes a person CHOOSES to be alone because they are done with gossips, rude, thoughtless and self serving people. 😊

When you have nothing to offer you’ll find out who your true friends are .

The hardest lesson Ive learned in life is that there are people who get great joy out of hurting others.

The saddest thing is when you think you have a few good friends, and then they are not there when times are tough for you, and you need them the most.

Been hurt too many times by so called "friends"--it's best to be alone. My anxiety in life & betrayal from others has left me too exhausted to bother with "friends' anymore.

There was a time when I thought that I had lots of friends. That was until I was diagnosed with a terminal illness and spent six months in hospital. No visits, phone calls, not even a card. Once I was out of hospital the common excuse was "I hate hospitals". Yeah well try staying in one for a length of time. It made me realise that these weren't true friends, just those who hang on for the benefits of someone who's always there for them. No thanks. Now my best friend is my German Shepherd. He has a terrible history of abuse and neglect. He never had a friend who cared for him. Now he does and he appreciates me. My only hope is that I outlive him. The thought of abandoning him is too much to bear.

The miracle is not to have a hundred friends but it is to have one friend that would stand with you when the hundred is against you.

i totally agree with this tale. Over the years I have helped many people, it's in my nature, but when I've needed help in return, "I am told, sorry, can't help" Of course, I do still help people who need help, but i am very careful now. In fact, counting your true friends doesn't take long. One finger should do it.

I’m 31. Literally every friend I have made and become close to has disappointed me. It seems if you let your guard down enough people will always find a way to step on you.

Like mark twain said, if you die with only 1 best real friend, you were the luckiest person in the world.
