For the second time in three years Ernie Els was in a play-off for The Open, this time with Todd Hamilton.

The 38-year-old American was ranked 56th in the world after winning for the first time on the PGA Tour in March but had spent most of his career in Japan. Playing in his fourth Open, he admitted enjoying playing “ugly golf” and his scrambling skills ultimately proved decisive.

A second consecutive 67 put Hamilton one ahead of Els going into the final round, during which the lead fluctuated between not just that twosome but Thomas Levet and Phil Mickelson, with the left-handed American claiming his best Open finish of third.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for changing the format of the film Title!!!! So great to watch these now not knowing/remembering who is going to win!!!! :)))))))))))))
  • I remember, this was just when I was getting into golf (thanks mostly to Phil's exciting win at the Masters earlier that year) and the whole idea of using a 3-wood or hybrid from just off the green became its own niche ideology for the next... 3 years? 3.5? It never really took off but Todd made it work, and links golf in particular calls for creativity. This may have been his only moment in the Sun but he did earn it.

This is a great story of a player with the heart if not the game to win.

I was there at the 16th on day 1 when Todd Hamilton Eagled it. Seen Woods playing with Greg Norman if my memory serves me right.
