For those who don’t know, this song is about self harm, suicide, and the butterfly project. The song is very coded to explain how one feels in, or leading up to the act of self harming. The term “killing butterflies” is used when those going through the project, draw butterflies on themselves and whenever they self harm, they say “i killed the butterfly” instead of flat out saying “I hurt myself”. This is to safely convey messages to those close to them who can help without being given looks, unwanted opinions, etc. by other people. It’s actually very sad but the pace of the song resembles the frantic array of emotions that go through your head and that the only thing on your mind, the only solution you feel you have is to harm yourself. Definitely not a happy song but very beautiful and wonderfully expressive, giving a voice to those of us still stuck in a very dark place. For those of you that are going through this right now, remember, there is always someone willing to listen to you. I know it feels like it, but you are not alone. You have at least one persons in your life who would bend over backwards to help you. I can tell you from experience, it does get better. It will be ok, you will be ok, just take it one day at a time and find an outlet that works for you. You can write what you’re feeling in a journal, draw it out (even if you can’t draw, scribbling on a piece of paper works wonders), you can even tear up paper, just do not keep it inside. Let out those emotions and bit by bit you’ll feel better, I promise. We’ll get through this 🦋🦋
